Hiking/backpacking West Highland Way (Scotland) in October 2020.

The West Highland Way celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2020, so what's the better moment to walk it again?
I had time to do it in leisurely pace and I did so. Autumn (second half of October) is amazing time to hike this trail and I hope I was able to capture at least fracture of this beauty.

This video is not a backpacking and wild camping guide - there's plenty of them on YT and they are very detailed and good quality. I just recorded my walk and how I saw it. I wildcamped most of the times with exception of one night spent in the bothy and another one on Blackwater campsite in Kinlochleven.

It's worth to go in October because: no midges, less people, limitless camping choices, better temperature for walking and... in autumn, especially in 2020 (COVID and all this mess) is easier to socially distance when there are less people on the trail.

There will be one more part showing second part of the WHW.
I'll be happy to answer questions, if any. Appreciate all comments.

Enjoy the video!

Very enjoyable Seb. I’m with you on the smaller youtube hiking channels, they’re definitely more authentic brother.
  • hi Seb,enjoyed your video but missed you exclamations about the beauty of the loch or the trees, yes i do sing when i am walking, but not consciously and i did always sing a little when i was skiing. you are right about the you tube channels, liked abbey but now she is to well known somehow. all the best for you, greeting from Stralsund
  • @Beswicki
Enjoying another trip with you on here! Chris J-B is another smaller newish channel with great content i enjoy!
  • @WyeExplorer
Beautiful all the way Seb. You were blessed with the weather. I bet some of your thoughts referred to that blessing on more than one occasion. Loved that last forest camp - that was a sweet spot. We found one similar on my recent Wye Valley Walk. Well, I have more than 500 subs but you cannot get anything more authentic than seeking the soul of your late twin brother outdoors. There's real life going on right there. Any way, good start. Part 2 now. Mark
  • Excellent. Have been planning a trip but been a bit too busy cycle touring to actually do it. Thanks for the video it has renewed determination to get off the bike and walk for a change. Keep up the good work. You are fast becoming an institution!
  • @garethturner
Excellent video as always. Random tunes often pop in my head although usually I’m humming either the animals came in two by two or the theme for Robocop. As for channels I like. My favourite ones are like yours where there is a multi day adventure with beautiful scenery. P.s. I like when you have your talk sections as i get to find out how your mood is and what your adventure has been for you thus far.

Really enjoyed that Seb. Brought back a lot of good memories from a few years back when I walked it. I remember so many of the sights from your video so clearly. I think you're right about October temperatures being far more agreeable for this - I did it in May: the midges weren't bad, but it was quite a heatwave. Oh, and yes, I often get songs stuck in my head and when walking and sing away the hours. Or at other times just find myself completely lost in thought, I can be in a trance like state for miles at a time. That's why I enjoy walking on my own a lot. Looking forward to part 2.
  • @TheHikeBegins
I have to say Seb, I think you found a better camping spot at Conic Hill than I did. The sunset/sunrise was epic and you captured that really well. Will look forward to Part 2.
  • @JimBobele
Love your trip, especially topic 3 of your conclusion, that made my day ;-) Gorgeous weather so far, you must be very lucky guy Happy hiking
  • This is serendipitous. Finished the WHW this morning, and am now enjoying your video at home. It's been almost ten years and I'm sure it has got more difficult since then (there might just be another reason...cough...unfit...cough). Last year the sheep on the Southern Upland Way got a loud rendition of Danny Boy - the WHW is a bit too busy for me to sing out loud. The colours of autumn through the whole route were just incredible, the weather not so much. Look forward to part two. Thanks!
  • @rolandmd73
Very nice, thanks for sharing. Love the calm soundtrack 👍🏻
  • @smoggiewalks578
Did not disappoint Seb, memories of my trip in 2019, and I would do it again. I too hum tunes as I wander, along with the occasional dance. As for micro channels fav at the moment is Dave outdoors scotland & Morgs4mountains. Look forward to seeing pt2. Take care Martin
  • Most enjoyable vid the WHW is on our list so I'll enjoy following your progress.
