When we think of scrapped Disney Parks we usually think Westcot or Disney's America. But did you know that there was almost a Disney Park right near the St. Louis Arch, and that Walt Disney himself had plans for it?

Here is the story of Disney's Riverfront Square, one of Walt's most ambitious theme park ideas ever.

  • It just occurred to me I said "Riverside" instead of "Riverfront" a few times. Please accept my Jean Lafitte reference as an apology.
  • Riverfront square sounds like it would be an expansion to New Orleans Square
  • Living in St. Louis, I've never been so upset about a cancelled Disney Park. Although space definitely would have been an issue. Maybe across the river? Great content as always!
  • Him: Mar-a-mec Me, a St. louisan: it’s Mar-a-MAC, sir Also me: whyyyy Walt? WHYYYY
  • i've lived in STL all my life.... First concern from me is the flooding on where he wanted it. People from stl, all i can think of is the time the Admiral Casino boat got loose......I remember when there use to be number of boats. Admiral and Casino Queen got sold. McDonalds and Burger king.....
  • As a Missourian I am upset that we missed out on a chance to be that close to a Disney park. Guess I’ll have to settle for Silver Dollar City (which I’m not complaining about because SDC is amazing!)
  • As a St. Louis native, it’s cool to know Disney wanted to put a park here. I knew he was a Missouri native but still.
  • Reminds me how Disney almost bought out the Seattle Center back in the 80s.
  • I am from St.Louis and and finding out that there was supposed to be a disney park here upsets me TO THIS DAY lol. It would have been so pretty tight by the river. Thanks for another great video offhand!
  • @brycevo
We could have had more Disneyland Parks in the states? Dang.
  • The Mermac Caverns ride probably would have been an omnimover or boat ride. I think of it as being something like the old Malstrom ride where you probably go back on a semi-mystic journey through the local Native American culture.
  • I really wonder if we'll ever see a third Disney park resort in the US. And if so, where? Texas? Washington? Another excellent video, though! I had no idea this park was so far along into planning. Can't wait for more!

It always amazes me that no matter how much Disney history I know, there always seems to be more. It's amazing that Walt could put so much time and effort into projects like this that didn't even pan out, when you look at all the things he did complete!
  • I could only dream of having a Disney park that close to me
  • @seaskulls
i was about to take a nap but this is more important
  • Of course St. Louis didn’t get this park. 🙄🙄🙄🙄 My city will forever be basic.
  • I think the one cave ride would be like the mine train ride at Knott’s berry farm. Slow moving and showing off different scenes like waterfalls, native rituals and other things like that.

I live in St. Louis and one of the perennial complaints from tourists about the riverfront is that there's nothing to do other than go up in the arch and photograph it. I can't imagine how much more popular the riverfront would be if Disney had built a replica of "old St Louis" (considering that all the original riverfront buildings have been demolished). With the proposed Haunted Mansion reflecting local architecture (say a Neoclassical/Italianate style) and add to that "Pirates of the Mississippi" (and yes, they did exist) I think the St Louis riverfront would have been a major US attraction. On the other hand, I can see a simple reason why they didn't build here on the riverfront -- constant flooding.

Oh wow I’m early. I had no idea this was a potential thing. I’m very familiar with the Six Flags in St. Louis though.
