MagniGyro: Vittorio Magni's first flight tests!

Publicado 2023-01-20
A historical video showing Vittorio Magni dealing with the first fly tests of his gyroplane!

The Bensen was a pioneering gyrocopter, a simple seat on which the pilot sat, under which the control system passed to the rotor and the rudder keel to which the vertical wheelies were attached. A rotor with a steel frame and wooden blade provided sustenance. There was no engine installed, the translation was done by pulling with a car... All was very simple, but "that thing didn't want to take off!"

The attempts were many and the failures numerous...
until a friend suggested a change in the pitch of the blades.
The first jump came with Mr. Blini on the gyroplane and Vittorio Magni driving the car. Vittorio couldn't take his eyes off the rear-view mirror. Lonate's field was soaked and full of puddles, it was on top of one of those that the first jump took place. With the passage the water was not agitated, a clear sign that the wheel had detached from the ground! It was the beginning!

  • Excellent, learnt this way over 30 years ago. Still best way to learn in a gyro particularly a light weight gyro can't get as close to light stick feel as a gyroglider. A lot less take off incidences would happen if people learned to wind up rotors in a dual gyroglider by hand first. Never saw anyone flapping blades at our club it wasn't until latter that blokes who had had to teach themselves that I saw lots of that. They all had pre-rotators but often would still get into blade flap. Of course most machines are too tall or enclosed to hand wind rotors but there was a lot to be learned in the simple and cheap machines. Its a great pity there are not many clubs still operating them so much experience you can get in a glider at next to no cost. We threw the baby out with the bath water. We should be keeping the old glider and adding the two seat powered instruction on top of it. Just my opinion.
