The McLaren F1 road car's story and development for the historic LeMans race of 1995.

Gruesome driving conditions, the debut of a remarkable new car, and a titanic battle to the flag caused many to describe the 1995 Vingt-Quatre Heures du Mans as the most exciting race in the event's long and glorious history.

But this was also the year in which the ultimate road-going sports car, the McLaren F1, stamped it's superiority over the world's finest race-bred opposition... and this is the fly-on-the-wall documentary that captured the heard of the action.

Made amidst the tension and intrigue of the pit lane, ride in-car with the winning drivers, eavesdrop on their conversation - and those of the opposition - witness team tactics and pit action as never before: witness the most gripping of duals right up to the chequered flag!

  • As the Producer of the Film I'm more than flattered by so many kind and informed comments. Even 25 years later it holds up very well against more recent ones. Thank you all Shaun M Redmayne
  • MAN these were the days!...GT1 class with McLaren F1s, Ferrari F40s, Corvettes, Skylines, Supras, NSXs, Porsches, Jag XJ220s, Lister Storms...and other lesser know brands. What an incredible time.
  • The F1's my all time favorite car; it would be a dream to drive one of them someday. A man can dream.
  • The German said 'its a properly designed car' that's the highest praise indeed. proof Gordon Murray is a God
  • A brilliant piece of engineering 25 years later, the F1 is timeless.
  • Even today, with tiny little camera's we don't have action shots like this...Behind the pedals was an awesome view... That Heel/Toe thooooooooo
  • JJ is one of the only drivers to reach the peak of what the car can do , a friend of mine was working on the cars ( at this race) and the guy was breaking with almost twice the foot preasure putting in corrections even before the back would break away...... one of the drives I ever seen > Thanks for the upload

the only thing wrong with this documentary is that it isn't 24 hours long.
  • Even now in 2018 the McLaren F1 is still the fastest naturally-aspirated road-legal car in the world. It's certainly the greatest super-car of the 20th century and the ultimate sports car. The super light chassis, fully manual gearbox with 3 pedals, BMW twelve cylinder powerplant, central driving position & exquisite styling put it in a class of its own. 25 years later very few exotic/super-cars can even justly be compared to the F1. I love the Pagani Huayra to death, it's a work of art, but it's still not quite in McLaren F1 territory. McLaren's own efforts at out-doing itself have resulted in fast cars with great technology but most look like mutated tree frogs and lack the perfection of the central driving position. Gordon Murray & his team accomplished something magical, and it will never be replicated.
  • "where you brake? at 300?" "no no a little later" "ah, J.J. putain be careful ah" LOOOOOL this documentary is absolutely amazing
  • 12:22 the talk through of the course is exactly what I found out while playing the video game Real Racing 3. While Real Racing 3 is just a video game, it truly is terrifying to drive the leMan course and after 4 laps, i'm exhausted. The speed and the concentration that these guys have to drive each stint, is unimaginable. Bravo to all involved in these races.
  • Gordon’s haircut, moustache and overly large shirt combo are going to be huge in 2020! Trust me. I’m already well into my first Mullet! Everyone loves it!
  • The part with the song. "There ain't no brake man on this train" Makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

2:57 - what he is referring to here is the conversation he'd already had with Honda, since Honda-McLaren were in F1 partnership, Gordon Murray wanted Honda to build the V12 and they basically said no, multiple times. After unsuccessfully getting Honda to design and make the engine, Murray went to BMW (who were in F1 also at the time) and they based the V12 off the 850Csi they had recently made but obviously ported the heads and changed it into a more purpose built design for maximum power delivery - it was actually heavier than what Gordon Murray originally wanted when he gave the parameters to both Honda and BMW but BMW made it more powerful than what Murray had originally asked for.
  • i read those extra crossed headlights that lanzante added is what helped JJ set the lap times that were some 20 seconds faster because he was able to see the whole corner on turn in and the lights lit up the apex the whole way thru the corner. so in the dark the other cars were guessing where the apex was on corner entry.
  • Outstanding documentary of a great victory. JJ Lehto in the wet, come on.
  • @kallo182
Back in the Days, when the fastest Car of the World was actually a Race Car. And not a 2000Kg heavy Living Room that drives 400Kmh.
  • the greatest car ever built ! What a car , what a story , what a victory ! Thanks for the upload !
