Analog Horror was once seen as an incredibly new and unique form of horror which completely revolutionized what we found scary on the internet. However, Analog Horror has since become overplayed and predictable, with many considering it to be ruined. But, is it actually? Well, in todays video we take a look at exactly that!

Analog horror has just become a parody of itself. Everyone’s scrambling to be the next Mandela catalogue so much that they forgot what made it good in the first place.

horror is like comedy, if you do the same thing over and over, it loses its affect

I think Monsters Inc has the key to why Analog Horror has lost its flair. One thing that's mentioned is that kids aren't getting scared anymore, but all the monsters are doing is running up screaming. There's no style, no finesse, just screaming. There's still kids that get scared but its lost its teeth. Meanwhile, in Monsters University they mention adults don't get scared, it's pointed out to be impossible. Yet when Mike is stuck in the human world with cops coming down, he uses environment and atmosphere to do the impossible and terrify an entire squad of cops. This is what Analog lacks, style and atmosphere. Faces changing while an AI voice talks over isn't scary. You need more as you get older. If something is to stay potent it has to keep bringing the scares.

I just miss when it was niche and unique back in 2019-2020. Personally I believe digital horror has surpassed analog horror by a long shot.

I feel horror as a whole is becoming harder and harder to "keep" it scary so to say with kids getting access earlier and earlier to the internet, or at least that's how it seems

I wish Analog horror creators and horror creators in general took inspiration from the early YouTube horror period otherwise known as the “weird side of YouTube” because back then these videos were more artistic and experimental! That era was one of my biggest inspirations for my own work and I wish more people looked back on it.

A plushie promotion right after talking about a real life child that died. That's uhhh, a interesting marketing strategy for sure.

To quote Syndrome from The Incredibles: “And when everything’s themed around analog horror, nothing will be.”

Analog horror fell to the same problem that the backrooms did. Kids involved themselves and the quality tanked. Once your product becomes designed for children it loses its edge.

hearing the notes for black parade gave me more emotional whiplash than any analog horror series of recent times

I feel like youtube kids has something to do with it, oversaturated things done over and over that are designed for all ages, but horror shouldnt be for all ages, a six year old shouldnt see their favourite cartoon characters face with their eyes dug out whether its well done or not.

I think the problem with the genre as of now is how oversaturated the genre is with low-quality videos, with actually good Analog horror videos feeling far and in-between each upload. Out of all the recently made analog horror videos that have been uploaded, I could only think of a few videos that are not only good, but are also accurate enough to have authentic VHS filters.

The fact that Alex, the creator of MC hated that he even created the infamous face is telling. However MC has evolved. It has turned into something that I actually enjoy, with high amounts of effort.

A big problem is that people forget that "Analog" is so much more than VHS/broadcasts. Radio Station 58 had a multitude of videos. Including live-footage of a person driving around. Another that does it well is "Laceys Games" -a parody of Flashgames, but with a very sad/disturbing background. These things hit harder, because they cover so many aspects. And leave new possibilities.

I think the fact that a lot of people seem to only talk about "bad" ones where its just "look at the scary face!!!!" and talk about how analog horror is dead, completely overshadows any other that has a different concept ,like " the tangi virus" or the incredibly underrated " winter of 83" ,and the fact that literally every project gets compared to local 58/gemini home entertainment/mandela catalogue even when the concept is entirely different and not seen as its own thing also doesn't help
  • @mr_selfdestruct
My personal issue with analog horror is that a lot of it it's based in USA nostalgia, which makes it hard for me personally (a EU citizen) to really relate to it or find it scary. I think a lot of projects are really cool, but they don't hark into that scary nostalgia feeling that I'm sure it does for a lot of USA citizens.

Your captain Orion example is more entertaining than all the Waltan Files clones that people pump out Also I love your laugh

I think the Analog horror ‘phase’ has been and gone for the most part but people will continue to make amazing content in a similar style to Analog Horror. They will likely be more rare and will have their own smaller fan base
