How to design YOUR OWN Trumpet Mouthpieces with Vennture

NOTE - Vennture Mouthpieces no longer offers raw brass prototype mouthpieces because they are doing something even better - 3D PRINTED prototypes. See Vennture Mouthpieces on Facebook for more information.

In this video, I describe my experience creating two custom mouthpieces with VENNTURE MOUTHPIECES - a new player on the mouthpiece market that allows YOU to easily design, test, and create your own custom mouthpieces using their groundbreaking mouthpiece design and comparison software called VennCAD. One of the most notable things about working with Vennture is that your custom designs can start with your current mouthpiece (scanned and profiled) and then VennCAD lets you make an essentially infinite number of alterations and adjustments to it. Imagine tweaking your current mouthpiece for different purposes - orchestral, pops, lead, cornet, flugelhorn, piccolo, or anything really...

Normally, designing a custom mouthpiece based on my own equipment would be either very expensive or very time consuming - but doing this project with Vennture was neither. You owe it to yourself to check them out and see what's possible for YOU. A huge thanks to Vennture for collaborating with me on this video!

  • Vincent Bach and Renold Schilke would be amazed at just how far mouthpiece design and machining have evolved in the past 100 years. Just the ability to hold such tight tolerances is incredible. Jon many thanks for your great videos! 🎺👍

I hope Doug links this on his site! It's really cool to see the process from start to finish. I recently had a vintage cornet mouthpiece replicated by Vennture. It saved my playing... I've been using this mouthpiece for 17 years, and objectively, it's probably a terrible mouthpiece, but it just works really well for me! But I upgraded to a modern horn, and my original MP shank didn't fit. The Vennture copy is actually better than the original, on both my modern horn, and my vintage one (due to some tweaks, but also just surface finish).

Another superb trumpet nerd video! You have mentioned before that you play with a dry embouchure - how about a discussion of the pros and cons of wet vs dry?

When I played Monette trumpets Dave made me a lead mouthpiece to accommodate my big lips. He did the same one for Scotty Barnhart at around the same time as we both played the same rim. It was like a 1C but with a flatter bottom and tighter backbone. The flatter bottom made it effectively shallower to help with the compression. I don't have it now as I changed instruments after my divorce! I went to smaller rims before mashing my lips in an accident so I am back on much bigger mouthpieces again. The missing link is something with more compression for when I need it.

Wow, super cool to see this! I’ve always felt similar to you - I have a really hard time playing shallower mouthpieces and have really struggled to find a good “commercial” mouthpiece. Playing a stork 2c for Bb and C (different throat/Backbore for C)... might have to look into getting something similar made 🤓

This is BY FAR my favorite of your videos, no offense to your others, I'm just a gear head and this is the COOLEST!

Mind officially blown ... wow! Amazed at the technology available these days!
  • More about the LipStick test please ;) Awesome video and what a fantastic mouthpiece making process!

I really appreciate the content you make and how you present it. Would you ever consider making videos on the Stork brand? Also, would you ever make a video on what to expect/do when visiting a shop/factory for a consultation? Thanks again or the great informative content!

Look into the Bach Artisan Series Mouthpiece.i ordered a 1 C . I like a mellow sound. They went back to the very old days of Bach’s designs . The rim doesn’t have that bite and is more comfortable.

The obvious question - what was your final cost? This video reminds me of a true story about Maynard as told by one of the musicians in Maynard's trumpet section. Maynard's trumpet, for whatever reason, was transported separately to a gig and arrived just before the gig was about to start. However, it arrived WITHOUT his mouthpiece. Upon discovering this, Maynard called out to the trumpet players asking if anyone had an extra mouthpiece. Someone tossed him a trumpet mouthpiece which was totally different from Maynard's normal one. Maynard then played the entire gig with the substitute mouthpiece and sounded just as brilliant and powerful as always with his usual incredible range. That's how it's done!
