Giant Mountain and RPR Winter Climb - Adirondacks

Published 2019-03-03
An attempt to climb Giant and Rocky Peak Ridge in the winter season. Unfortunately, conditions and strategy weren't on my side this trip...but every once and a while, a hike like this has to happen...Share with me some of your least enjoyable experiences in the High Peaks!

  • I've climbed only six high peaks (plus Snowy Mountain) and enjoyed them all--except Rocky Peak Ridge. Climbed it in 1985 when I was 22 with my brother (a 46er) and my dad. My boots did me in. I think they were a bit too small and probably not hiking-suitable anyway. A struggle going up. At one point, I think near that huge boulder, my brother said we could wait there while he finished the hike, but I hate quitting, so we pressed on to the summit, but I had no appetite when I got there. Feet and legs ached for a few days afterward, and I mentally vowed never to do that again. But eventually caught the hiking bug again and conquered four more high peaks with my brother--and in different boots. Great video, especially the intro!
  • i did Table Mt and Peekamoose Mt in Catskills the other day... 81 degrees 5 miles out and i started to cramp and over heat only to see that i still had to retrace the 5 miles back. Never been so happy to see the car at the trail head!

Last July my wife and I were attempting Phelps and Tabletop. We started in the morning and it was raining, which continued all day with downpours at times. We completed Phelps and started up Tabletop only to orphan it about a half-mile from the summit due to large amounts of water collecting on the trail. It was so devestating but probably the safer decision. We later learned that night that it was Tropical Storm Fay that we were hiking through.

This is hysterical because I can so relate. I definitely know that feeling of being so done and yet there’s still so far to go.
  • 13:30 Anyone who’s done a Winter High Peak has made that face 😂😂😂😂 “So happy to be here! Get me home now plea

Worst moment: standing at the intersection of the Algonquin and Lake Colden trails, after coming down from Algonquin, having orphaned Iroquois. Completely spent, and realizing that I had nearly 6 miles back to the Loj, through the rocky section by Avalanche Lake. Lessons learned. Excellent video.

I submitted giant in a thunder storm raining sideways, and had to orphan RPR.

I think I see myself in your vid! Jk, but I was on Dial and Nippletop that same day, which you get great views of from Giant. Looks like much less snow up on Giant. The sign at 0.2 miles from Nippletop was buried under the snow (usually 6 feet high). In January I was going to do Giant and RPR getting a late start. Seeing how long it took to get back from RPR, in the dark, exhausted and discouraged I'm glad I decided to bail on RPR. Gread video, loved watching your adventure.
  • We left our bags like that to save time to Marshall last winter in -21F temps. Like you said, bad idea. Hindsight being 20-20, we probably should not have done that. I do not leave my bag in the winter anymore. In the summer, it is usually a good choice to save weight and time. In the winter, I think it is risky.
  • Started a partial great range 20 mile hike at 7 am and it poured. Going down saddleback was pretty sketchy with the wind. Ended at 9

I was climbing Algonquin from lake Colden and fell through the ice at one of the crossing and got soaked. About 100m up the trail I fell through again. I finish the summit to Algonquin but orphaned Iroquois and Wright peak.

I did Giant for the third time this october with a friend, it was supposed to be a sunset, but about 3/4 of the way up we started heading into the clouds. It would've been amazing because it was peak fall foliage and there was something about the lighting heading up (it was really hazy from the humidity, but everything was glowing), but oh well. we ended up stopping along the way down because it had cleared up so I was able to do some astrophotography, and I ended up getting some of my favorite shots from that hike. also, I take offense to that comment about the roaring brook falls trail lol, that's one of my favorite spots to stop at the end of a long day of hiking

I was out hiking for about 8 or, 9 hours on a trail I have never been on before. The sun was starting to go down. It was a very nice day all day, so I decided just to sleep under a tree. That nice around midnight it started raining with thunder and, lighting so the whole night I didn't sleep at all
  • @RazerAcosta
Is there such thing as a clear sky at the peak of mountains during the winter? Want to see how it is but i heard it's usually foggy and cloud in the winters
  • @Polarcutter
Awesome video!! When will we see one from MacNaughton Mt?

Getting to the parking lot at the bottom of Whiteface and realizing that our ride didn't know to come to the lot so we had to walk out the road the down the major road to a off road turn out.
