How I chose my frameless pack

Published 2018-10-11
Decisions, decisions...follow along as I compare the Superior Wilderness Designs Frameless 30 ultralight pack to other frameless backpacks that I considered buying.

This is Part 3 of a three part series on the Frameless 30. In Part 1, I did a full review of the pack, and in Part 2 I demonstrated how I fit all my gear into this relatively small pack.

Welcome to my random musings on all things backpacking. If you haven't already guessed, my name is Dan. I was bit by the backpacking bug in 2014 and since then haven't gone one day without thinking about my next adventure. I'm from Chicago, a great city but...not so much known for its bountiful backpacking opportunities. Nevertheless, I haven't let that stop me from enjoying the outdoors. Hope my videos leave you with one or two takeaways, or even better, inspire you to head out on the trail. Thanks for watching! Have fun out there!

Thanks for this video. It really helped me to take the leap to frameless. I have been researching for weeks so many ultralight packs. I ordered one today. I got the ULA photon. I liked the features and the sizing for short people. LOL.
  • Perfect comparisons, makes sense why you chose SWD. I hope your channel gets more attention in the backpacking world because you do a very good job👍👍
  • ok thank you for your channel ! i'm french and i love your channel ! your explication is perfect !
  • Dan, I like the way you do comparisons on all your gear. I have a Zpacks Nero and it has been very nice and would continue to use it but I am having trouble with space. 25l is not enough got my gear, I have downsized from the Arc Haul at 62l and with 18lb. now I have ordered a Superior 40l Frameless and will have all the space I need with only a weight of 15oz. My new base will be around 13lb. Thanks, Trail Flea

Very good discussion. We essentially had the same process of elimination, although I ended up with the Nero. The cons you mentioned were non-issues for me as 1) I always used the foam pad or my sit pad; 2) I preferred the elastic band on the side pockets; 3) I found the 25L main body volume just right for my intended use; and 4) strangely, I really like the closure system because it allowed me to cinch it down tight. Moreover, I was sold on seam-sealed DCF from the beginning. I guess to each his own, and I'm glad you found the right pack for yourself.
  • MLD has addressed your concerns, I've just received mine. looking forward to test my first frameless bpack.

What purpose were you using to guide your selection? Ultralight thru-hiking, multi-day hikes, or something else? Some of these seem a bit small for thru-hiking. Thank you.

Had a burn, sold it. Got Nero, (still have it) and just got the v2. Trying to evaluate if the bottom pocket is worth the hype but I will admit the lack of daisy chains is a real kick in the manhood. Now I’m thinking about getting a burn again lol but this time, with prophet straps.

Did you ever look at the Lite AF 35L Curve?
  • Have you looked into LiteAF packs? I am but I'm very concerned about having a frameless pack, as I'm new to backpacking. Looking closely at Hyperlite Mtn. Gear.

Thanks for the great video. I bought a Nero. I found it to be a piece of CRAP. • Wish I had bought either a Pa'lante Simple Pack V2, or - Superior Wilderness Designs Frameless 30 or perhaps now the new Northern Ultralight Sundown. Guess I will start saving my money and get one of the other three. Anybody want to by a Nero? CHEAP? Barely used, only enough to know it isn't for me.
