How to pack a small, frameless backpack

Published 2018-10-09
Want to know how to pack a small, frameless backpack? Follow along as I demonstrate how I pack my gear into the Superior Wilderness Designs Frameless 30.

The Frameless 30 is 38L ultralight pack (30L in the main body, 8L external). The gear I'm packing is a typical winter setup for me. You can find descriptions of the main gear mentioned in this video below.

This is Part 2 of a three part series on the Frameless 30. In Part 1, I did a full review of the Frameless 30, and in Part 3 I will discuss why I chose SWD over similar packs.

Welcome to my random musings on all things backpacking. If you haven't already guessed, my name is Dan. I was bit by the backpacking bug in 2014 and since then haven't gone one day without thinking about my next adventure. I'm from Chicago, a great city but...not so much known for its bountiful backpacking opportunities. Nevertheless, I haven't let that stop me from enjoying the outdoors. Hope my videos leave you with one or two takeaways, or even better, inspire you to head out on the trail. Thanks for watching! Have fun out there!

  • Wow, we finally have the full pack in the frame. His first video , the pack was hardly ever shown in the video.

Id be getting a bin liner plastic bag to line your backpack with, use the sleeping pad as the back rest, your sleeping bag/quilt by squashing it at the bottom it reduces the life of the quilt, and the down affectiveness.

About a year late but so GLAD I WATCHED. Learned A LOT. Great ass video.

You can fit a lot in there. I ordered the 40 liter with 4 additional Lycra mesh outside pockets. I’m planning to have my hammock, quilts, clothing, cook kit, food, on the inside and then my tarp, water, rain gear, electronics, tools, personal care, snacks, all having their own dedicated outside pocket, leaving space in the front mesh pocket for anything that gets wet or something like a bag of chips.

videos are looking good, any plans for a longer hike in the future?

Do you find the pack bows or curves on you and it feels like there’s a contact point against the middle of your centre line of your back (more so up between the shoulder blades)?
  • That food bag did not look like it had anywhere near 3 days worth of food in it to me. Maybe 1 day, unless you eat like a sparrow! But maybe you do! All good. BB

Seems you packed stuff you'd wear in cold weather? Also aren't use concerned your water filter will freeze?
  • @GrimesMusic
Now that LiteAF has shown up, would you get that over your SWD?
  • @barondavis5692
What’s the weight of your set up? I’m trying to decide between a frameless and framed.
  • @seanPar
where is the link for the pack?

Being an organizational weirdo, I’ve watched a lot of these and almost all have folks putting their tent near the bottom, which really confuses me. The tent is relatively light compared to other items, and it’s the first thing you need when you get to camp. What if it’s raining when you arrive? Having to take almost everything out and set it somewhere wet or exposed to get to the shelter seems like a drag. Putting the shelter near the top means no heavy weight near the shoulders and you don’t have to let stuff get wet or dirty while you setup, right?
  • I have only one problem with your pack strategy your tent should go on top soft stuff on lower part l. I am not you of course but it is kind of pain to pack off all the stuff to get to the tent on the bottom. Correct me if I don't understand your concept.
