For many Alaskans streaming online is not a good option, so movie night means Blockbuster night. While the vast majority of Blockbusters in the U.S. have closed down, there are few still hanging on. Today, there are only 10 left in the entire country, and six of those are in Alaska. But the dark, long winters and sparse layout of Alaska allows Blockbusters to do pretty well, especially when Wifi is substantially more expensive than in other states.
VICE News speaks with loyal customers at one of the last Blockbusters in the U.S. about why they love their old school movie night.

i remember getting my own personal blockbuster card as a kid...i felt like such an adult. The responsibility of bringing back the vhs on the due date, and having to have it rewinded...oh the nostalgia.
  • And now they are gone. Only one left in the U.S. and it's located in Bend, Oregon. It's really sad.

I remember as a kid when the weather was bad for the weekend it meant one thing: going to Blockbuster and renting a movie or a video game! Such nostalgia!

I remember seeing a blockbuster when I was in Alaska and I flipped out. Most unexpected thing ever.

I REALLY miss blockbuster. I miss walking in and browsing and letting different types of movies jump out at you. There was just something about walking in and reading the backs and actually sitting down and watching it because you spent time picking it out.

I do missed the video rental stores, sans rewinding the tapes part. :)
  • I miss blockbuster so much... You ended up watching so many different movies that you would normally not have watched otherwise. I miss the deals, the atmosphere and listening to other people talking about the movies and get instant reviews on the spot.

The best part is choosing from all their snacks while checking out....pop rocks...and the berry goo gel...

The Alaskan Blockbusters should be prevented from closing by adding them to The National Register of Historic Places.
