Mount Colden via Avalanche Pass - Adirondacks - Roulette Hike Review

Published 2019-11-06
Mount Colden in the Adirondacks is the 11th High Peak in the 46er Mountains - but might be one of the toughest in the range. From serene forests, avalanche slides, pristine mountain lakes, and of course, epic views at the summit - this one doesn't disappoint. While this hike is usually around 13 miles, I ended up closer to 16 miles due to some backtracking.

This was a pretty difficult hike, and can be an all day event if you are not a fast hiker. There are a lot of different types of terrain, and proper gear is a must. If you are new to hiking, please consider hiring a guide or completing some easier hikes prior to attempting Mount Colden. As always, if you are hiking in the Adirondacks, please obey the principles of Leave No Trace. Currently, the area is dealing with overcrowding, litter and eroding trails - so please take the utmost care if and when you visit.

Great video! I just did this hike 1 month ago. I also thought this was a really tough hike but the views made it worth it! The rock scrambles and ladders along Avalanche Lake begin to wear on you before you even start climbing the 1950'. I ran into a 46er on the way back to the Loj who recommended to take an Advil 3 times on the hike (before you start, at the summit, and when you are done). Also, I missed the sign but didn't get too far away because I was using AllTrails. If I didn't have AllTrails, I would have probably would have gone to the end of Lake Colden.

Did this hike a few years ago before I had a GoPro. Was thinking, I wish I had video to reminisce. So I found this. šŸ‘šŸ¼

Great video man! Taking this exact trail/route at the end of August. Surprised you didn't bring trekking poles!

I want to do this in August but I'm scared my boyfriend and my brother won't be up for it. Hopefully I can convince them šŸ‘€ great video
  • This is sick! Do you think dogs can complete avalanche pass? My dog is very athletic and has climbed other difficult and scrambly peaks like Iroquois and Big Slide. Iā€™m just not sure how much you need to be on your hands and knees, ya know. Thanks
