The secrets of Banksy

Published 2024-07-28
Putting together the first authorized exhibition in 14 years of works by the anonymous street artist Banksy required extensive planning, and a cover story to hide its secret until it opened, unannounced, in Glasgow last summer. Correspondent Seth Doane explores the art and the mysteries of Banksy's world, including the continued speculation about the artist's true identity, a closely-held secret for decades. Banksy has been at this for over 30 years! And yet we have a mental image of a young punk setting up his stencils and spray cans surreptitiously. A caped crusader who inspires the world with his brilliant but easy to understand commentaries.

I think the ultimate irony is that the art world of buyers making $$$$$$ off of Banksy. That's the biggest joke of all and it's grotesque.

I like Banksy. I think he's great fun. However, as a Bristolian I found it rather strange to find my native city described as "the working class town of Bristol". Yes, there are working class districts and poverty there but there are also very wealthy areas. In fact, it has the third largest average salary (after London and Edinburgh) of any major city in the UK. What it also has is a strong tradition of rebellion as well as of creating great art and music.
  • I hope we never find out either! The world needs this art and the messages - it gives one pause to think about what is being said.

If his identity were known, it would be harder for him to carryout many of his projects. It might also put him at risk of arrest, which is why he guarded his identity in the first place. At least, this explanation makes sense to me. If I'm wrong, please let me know.

the public are such fools , sometimes.. ( we always want what we can't have).. banksy is great with marketing indeed .. if i remember correctly , salvador dali climbed down into the sewer system to meet with the press .. ( in the late60's..) the journalists climbed down to interview him .. he did it just to show the foolishness of the public and what they'll do to get a peek , an interview , etc.. all so ridiculous , in my humble opinion ..

Tiresome secretive Banksy. Go see real artists like the Georgia O' Keefe exhibition at the Chicago Art Institute.
