"All Along the Watchtower" is a song written by Bob Dylan, but it's Jimi Hendrix's rendition that arguably became the most famous. Hendrix's cover is widely regarded as one of the greatest rock songs of all time.

Bob Dylan originally wrote and recorded "All Along the Watchtower" for his 1967 album "John Wesley Harding." It's a sparse, acoustic folk song featuring Dylan's signature poetic lyrics. Hendrix released his cover of "All Along the Watchtower" on his 1968 album "Electric Ladyland." Hendrix's version is a complete reinterpretation of the song, featuring his electric guitar wizardry, innovative production techniques, and soulful vocals.

Hendrix's version of the song was a commercial success and received widespread critical acclaim. It reached number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United States. Many consider it one of the greatest cover songs ever recorded. The lyrics of "All Along the Watchtower" are often interpreted as allegorical, but their precise meaning remains ambiguous. Dylan himself has offered different interpretations of the song's lyrics over the years. Some interpretations suggest themes of apocalypse, social upheaval, or existential questioning.

Hendrix's version of "All Along the Watchtower" has had a lasting impact on popular culture. It has been covered by numerous artists and featured in various films, TV shows, and commercials. Its distinctive guitar riff and Hendrix's impassioned vocals have made it an iconic piece of music history.

Overall, "All Along the Watchtower" stands as a testament to the power of reinterpretation in music, with Hendrix's electrifying version breathing new life into Dylan's original composition.

After Bob Dylan heard Jimi’s cover of this song, he was so impressed he said, “It’s his song now”.

Jimi reigns supreme from his own planet, untouchable, unmatched. No need to judge whether he was "the best" or not, there's simply nobody like him.
  • Hendrix was a once in a lifetime performer. We'll never see his like again. He was here for a split second, changing the world of Rock music, and then he was gone.
  • 100% one of the most iconic rock songs ever. Bob Dylan, the original writer/performer, has said that it's pretty much Jimi's song now. After Jimi's version Bob even adopted some of the changes Jimi made to it, and when he performed it for many years after Jimi was gone, he said it felt like a tribute honoring Jimi. Jimi wrote the vast majority of his songs (music & lyrics, which he should get more credit for), but when he does a cover, like this one & 'Hey Joe', he makes it completely his own. Great reaction, guys!
  • I read Jimi Hendrix was left-handed and he couldn't find a guitar during the time of the 60s for left-handed people. He just turned his guitar upside down and played it with his left hand, self taught. There is nobody like this man or has been since.❤

..."and the wind begins to howl".....and then comes Jimi's guitar....it's a great version of Dylan's song. Thanks for playing...👍
  • As a 16yr old,I saw Jimi’s last public live performance at the legendary Isle of Wight festival,England in 1970. 3 months later,he was dead. My mum was distraught. The legend lives forever though.
  • The result is a masterpiece that Bob Dylan even preferred to his own and amended the structure of his initial track for later live performances to be more like Hendrix’s, explaining: “I liked Jimi Hendrix’s record of this and ever since he died I’ve been doing it that way,” adding: “Strange how when I sing it, I always feel it’s a tribute to him in some kind of way” Hendrix was a huge Dylan fan, he covered a few of his songs. Dylan wrote the amazing lyrics but Jimmy made that song his.
  • ♥ Jimi Hendrix! I suggest these Hendrix songs: Purple Haze, Are You Experienced, Bold As Love, Little Wing, I Don't Live Today & Dolly Dagger
  • More than 50 years after hs passing, Jimi Hendrix is still considered to be the greatest guitarist who ever lived (followed by Jimmy Page of Led Zepplin and Eric Clapton). In the sixties, Eric Clapton was interviewed and asked what it was like to be the greatest guitarist in the world. He said, "I don't know. You'll have to ask Jimmy Hendrix." Jimi set the bar to play guitar and had so much influence that rock and roll would never be the same.
