Eerie "air raid" siren | Whelen WPS-2802 | NYE 2021 (ambient recording)

Happy New Year! I decided to try something a little different for this year's festivities and gave one of my Whelen outdoor warning sirens a shot at ringing in the new year, instead of sticking to the annual tradition of running my smaller W.S. Darley 2T siren. This is one of two clips that I recorded during the main event, taken from our front porch on the opposite side of the house from the siren's location to capture all of the crazy reverb created by the surrounding terrain and houses. The second video, which was shot from our backyard where the siren is actually visible, should be coming out pretty soon as well.

Despite what I put in the title, the Whelen siren you're hearing is technically a WS-282 (which uses a "2800" speaker array) that would normally be paired with its digital 864-driven control setup. However, just for this occasion, I opted to create sort of a "Frankenstein" setup by pairing the omni-directional speaker array with the ESC-2020 controller from the Vortex, in order to utilize the special "alternate" tone set option in its programming software. The first sound that's heard is the rather infamous "Best Possible Protection" tone, followed up by a short (and glitchy) "All Clear" tone. Fun fact: the ESC-2020 actually locked up for a moment at the very end of the All Clear tone, which is what caused that awkward hang up for a few seconds at the lower end of the frequency sweep where the signal normally should have cut off instead.

    I can't get over the way the 2020 sounds like it's gargling when it makes those tones. lol. I was going to sound off my siren for the New Year, but Mother Nature had other plans. I did a special test with it though. I should have the video up tomorrow.
