Wide Tyres VS Skinny Tyres | Which are best for motorcycle? | Hindi

Published 2020-06-24
Larger tires are needed to support heavier bikes, and wider tires mounted to appropriately sized rims will offer more grip because they have a larger footprint. But, if there’s one thing to remember when it comes to tire performance, it’s that everything is a compromise.

Wider tires, especially really wide setups like you might see on a custom cruiser or a fat-tire Suzuki Hayabusa, aren't good for handling. For starters, the bike won't tip into corners as easily and it will require more bar input to stay on line. Wider tires (and wheels) are also heavier so acceleration and braking performance suffer, and that extra mass makes your suspension's job harder since there's more unsprung weight to control.

Narrower, lighter tyres are definitely better for performance and handling, but they can’t handle as much horsepower.

Well, let me rephrase that. A skinny tire could potentially be designed to be super grippy so it could cope with all the horsepower, braking loads, and cornering forces a high-power bike can dish out, but not for very long, because the action of gripping the road tears, melts, and scrubs rubber off the tread.

If you enlarge the contact patch by making the tire wider, you get more grip and that larger contact patch dissipates more heat and provides more material to wear away, so the tyres lasts longer.

WIDE TYRE

Pros/Advantages :

More potential grip especially when cornering.
Allows for higher speeds in corners.
Allows for deeper lean angles when cornering.
More stable in corners.
Able to take more engine power.
Allows for harder throttle application when leaned over.
Safer to trail brake.
Allows for harder braking.

Cons/Disadvantages:

Usually costs more.
Feels “heavier” to steer.
Leaves more unused areas at the sides (called “Chicken Strips”) if not fully utilized.
Leans the bike further over into a corner than a skinnier tyre.
More mass means more power is needed for acceleration (rolling resistance).
More mass also means the suspension and brakes have to work harder.

SKINNY TYRE

Pros/Advantages :

Usually costs less.
Easier to steer.
Easier to utilize the whole tyre.
Less rolling resistance for faster acceleration and lower fuel consumption.
Less need for heavier springs in the suspension.
Leans less into a corner at a given speed compared to a wider tyre.

Cons/Disadvantages :

Less potential side grip, limiting cornering speed and lean angles.
Bike feels less stable, sometime skittish.
Too much throttle will overwhelm the small contact patch.
Less force for trail braking or not at all.
Must brake less aggressively.

  • (1) traction control : wider tires increases stability not grip, grip is depended on tire's compund (stiffness or softness), "bada tire chipak ke chalata hai? Tire contact to ground is totally depended on preload adjustment of rear shock absorber (soft adjustment makes tire to stitch to surface and stiff suspension makes tire to bounce off in case of public road as public road are never flat) (2) Handling : yes you are totally right narrow tires are easy to maneuver because increase in tire width causes increase lean angel 👍 (3) Resistance : yes, wider tires have increased friction due to great contact patch but i dont have clue for clutch wala theory because its related to momentum (4) Engine : you are right, wider tires have increased stability thats why they are used in half litre or litre class motorcycles btw its totally depended what company is designing its for, eg. Aprilia RF has 190 and Panigale has 200 with same class engine (5) Cost : ..... (6) Stability : ek scene ko kat kat ke bata rahe ho, as stability handling and cornering are on same page (refer to point 2) (7) cornering (refer to point 1 and then 2) (8) acceleration and braking : partially right on acceleration but braking means stopping the momentum of object, momentum is based upon weight and motorcycles with wider tire are heavy thats why it takes lot of effort to stop them, but luckly those motorcycles are equipped with better brakes system so they stops even faster. (9) Road condition : ...... Lastly my advice Stick to your OEM tire size but you can change between brands for change in tire compound Stiff compound gives you more mileage less grip and they last longer, gives you more kms Soft compund gives your more grip a little bit less mileage and they do not last longer, less kms If you forcefully puts larger tire on narrow rim It will change its tire shape and profile because it will squeeze in rim but not perfectly fit. Additionally it will add unsprung weight on your motorcycle making your shocks to worker harder and damaging it permanently over time.

Thank you very much for writing it out in the description! 🍪🍪🍪
  • Very helpful. I would like to ask you about the oversized tyre in both respect of four and two wheeler. Especially I am in doubt to choose the best option in between these two 1) 165x65 R13 and 2) 155x70 R13. My original fitment is 155x65 R13. Please advice.

I have royal Enfield classic signals 350 (send strome) 90-90-19 inch front , 110-90-18 inch rear , ideal and good information about bike tyres , technically very important roll of tyres in bikes
  • Thanks. Pls make a video on can we use same tyre size on front and back wheel and what are its pros n cons
  • Do you have any video on wheel alignment of bike tyres. If not please make one how to align these. Front tyre of my bike is rubbing more on one side.
  • @felixv2432
I have a RayZR bs6 scooter, in that the rear wheel tyre is so slippery while driving on a wet road, it easily slips so when l check the tyre l can see at the centre face there is no treat at all. So, my question is, is it ok to do retreading at the centre face, and if so, should that be perform by deflating the tyre or can it be done even if its not deflated?
  • The way of your explanation about the tyres in this video is Awesome Bhai thank you.....
  • I agree all information. And for that I recommend TVS Apache RTR 200 4V Where you can't find any issue like acceleration, cornering, braking and all. It's best for every situation and off road and on road.

I bought a new SP 125 BS6 version. Rear tyre was 80/100-18. I changed it to 90/100-18 (ceat mileage). Now road grip is awesome and mileage has dropped by 2 kms per litre in city. But absolutely feeling safe now.
