Australia Censored with John Storey: The federal government’s online censorship bill

Published 2024-02-06
The Institute of Public Affairs’ Director of Law and Policy John Storey explains how the federal government’s online censorship bill will seek to silence mainstream opinion online.

The Communication Legislation Amendment (Combatting Misinformation and Disinformation) Bill, will require foreign owned social media companies to censor mainstream Australians to the satisfaction of Canberra-based politicians and bureaucrats under the threat of massive fines.

You cannot have a functioning democracy if one side of a debate is silenced. That’s exactly what will happen under the federal government’s proposed laws, which will supercharge online censorship and empower biased ‘fact-checkers’, who have proven they cannot be trusted to be impartial.

Over the coming weeks, John will take you through the details of the proposed changes and talk to leading minds about the insidious nature of the proposed laws and the push by the political class and elites to censor mainstream opinion online.

The State should never be the arbiter of the truth.

There are no leaders that currently represent us, the people here in Australia, or even the Western world
  • Censorship is “muffing” as in placing “ear muffs” on everyone. How can we vote for our CHOICE when all information is “muffed”. I say stop the “Muffers”
  • When facts have been called "offensive" and "insensitive" to the point of warranting censorship, then we have a major problem here.
  • How disgusting, these politicians are supposed to be there for the people not for their dictatorship. How we can object, so it isn’t passed as law. 🙏🇦🇺

I can't believe that we have come to this. Who gets to decide the truth? Looks like we will need a ministry for truth. How Orwellian

And who are they to think they can tell us what's dis or mis information. This has all come about re the covid 19 ... since when we the voters and tax payers the authority to government to dictate to us. Tax payers pay government their wages we should be telling government what's acceptable and what's not.

'Government online censorship bill'. What could possibly go wrong?
  • Some people blame these Censorship Laws have come about to protect children but now they attack the ordinary citizen. Parents should be there to protect their children from various SM content. If these new laws come about, I could be in trouble for voicing my beliefs. I dont want a NANNY Law to stop me from voicing my opinions if they they are discussed in a reasonable manner. I feel there are enough regulations for adults already. Does these new laws have anything to do with the Aspen Institute? If so, they need to be investigated in more deeply. 😳😳👍🇦🇺
