It’s a bittersweet truth: the very best of police detective work is likely to be born out of the very worst of mankind. It’s certainly the case when it comes to the investigation into the death of Cecilia Haddad. She was a young Brazilian woman who’d been living in Australia, working as a mining executive, for a number of years.

In 2018 she was murdered by a jealous ex-boyfriend, Marcelo Santoro. He was also from Brazil and it's where he fled to immediately after killing Cecilia. Santoro might have thought by escaping Australia he'd gotten away with his terrible crime, but he was wrong. On assignment for 60 MINUTES, Nine’s Christine Ahern reports that Santoro didn’t count on the determination of New South Wales police officers to bring him to justice.

I'm appalled by the volume of women who are stalked, harassed and murdered by men. It happens way too often. 🤬

As a Brazilian, I wanna thank you the Australian police for the hard working on this case. Cecilia Rest In Peace !

Having been a victim myself (survived having been shot 7 times) you don't imagine that this can happen to you. It is unimaginable to a normal person. He shot himself with the last bullet in his head. The police officer who questioned me afterwards said that that was good otherwise I would never have been left in peace. 40 years on, went on to become an alpiniste and a successful pt. Had a great partner, sadly now deceased, who gave me back my trust.

I know we shouldn't judge people by their looks but this bastard's face really reflects his personality. Rest in peace beautiful Cecilia.

The emergency call brought tears to my eyes. She’s obviously traumatized. She’s absolutely right about the sick feeling for the young girls family 😢

This made me cry. But the reality is that not even a police order can stop people like this.

The police dragged the river for 3 weeks to find a car key suspected of being thrown out a window and found it! Wow, cheers to the men and women in Blue, well done!

Thank you 60 minutes Australia for leaving comments open. It makes a huge difference for us watching. ❤
  • To say stalkers are dangerous is an understatement. They rob a person of their security and safety. For me they are one of the lowest lifeforms on the planet. Their goal is to control an individuals life and destroy it.
  • The work the police did is simply amazing. I remember watching a documentary on conditions inside Brazilian prisons. Cecilia's murderer will suffer. The wonderful lady who found her body, and the great friends who tried to protect her, are such loving and caring women. RIP Cecelia❤

Im so glad you interviewed (and they met) Christine Byrd. Her empathy is palpable. The world needs more people like her.
  • My goodness, I am watching this while fighting back tears. These friends are wonderful women and I immediately noticed the compassion in the woman that was calling for help when she was found. Three wonderful women bonding over such a horrific loss.
  • @MICKEYISLOWD
The love Cecille's friends have for her is breathtaking. Beautiful people.

Ladies, if you break up with a man and he still comes around despite you telling him not to, FILE A POLICE REPORT for stalking! Please!
  • @simongoddard7692
Imagine being such a good and loyal friend that you blame yourself for not calling the cops 😢 Everyone needs that kinda love and support in their lives
  • @ericarickert6775
This is so heartbreaking! I just lost one of my longest standing friends 2 days ago to her husband by a gun....their son was there and witnessed it all....the amount of heartbreak and pain by losing a loved one to what is pure evil is awful......no matter what kind of justice is given it will never be enough!!! My heart goes out to Cecilias family and friends....i am so sorry this had happened to her! May she forever R.I.P.

What really sucks, is that NOTHING will be done until a crime has been committed as it is! The justice system has always failed the victims until an actual fatal incident occurred. Laws need to change DRASTICALLY unless we keep watching these sad episodes.
  • @capnfrankly
What lovely compassionate friends and the lady who found her body 😭
  • @NewyorkRican2191
As a father to a young daughter this story truly breaks my heart and had me in tears. Our deepest thoughts and prayers go out to her family but most importantly, to her specials friends who loved her so much! Much love from the US and Colombia!
