Haiti and The Dominican Republic

The two countries that share the island of Hispaniola, the most populous island and second-largest island in the West Indies. What are the West Indies? Well, all these islands in or near the Caribbean Sea, for real. Because that Christopher Columbus dude, who was the first European to lead a voyage to the islands, thought he was near India when he first explored them, other Europeans began to call them the “West Indies” to distinguish the islands from India.

Anyway, Haiti is located on the western part of Hispaniola and The Dominican Republic is located on the eastern part of it. This 242-mile (391 km) border separates the two countries. Seen from space, this border is quite dramatic. On the Haitian side, you can see massive deforestation. On the Dominican side, forests remain.

While both countries have a lot in common, today a lot of people tend to focus on their many differences

That hoser fellow deserves an Oscar for that performance
  • As a Dominican, I'm glad to see a well informed, unbiased video about the situation in the island. Wish to see our Haitian brothers finally get their country back and be able to work together to improve our nations
  • I can speak for all Dominicans, who want Haiti to come out of the crisis and begin to grow as a country.
  • @FrancescaEtheart
As a Haitian, I respect how professionally and accurately you discuss the two countries. It is very sad the state Haiti is in. We have had nothing but bad luck for a long time. While Dominique Republique was able to overcome their difficulties. I pray to God our situation changes every day. May Haiti rise and prove everyone wrong.

When the French arrived on the island of Santo Domingo in 1697, there was already a people (Dominicans), with language, religion, gastronomy, culture, towns, churches, roads, schools, monastery, and even a university. The University of Santo Domingo founded in 1538. The French came 200 years later, which turned out to be a historical mistake, for the simple reason that you can not have a country inside another country.
  • To anyone who is worried about the Dominican Republic and crime, tourist locations are completely safe (Punta Cana/Puerto Plata) but obviously don’t have 100k laying around in your open hands in the middle of the night (but that’s anywhere). Crime in general is only really seen in the big cities like the capital, but smaller pueblos/villages generally have low violent crime and at worst you’ll get some petty theft or something. It’s more so focused in certain places than spread equally throughout the country. Just use your head and you shouldn’t have any issues.
  • Recently I've become obsessed with the Dominican Republic and this comparison is very interesting! While these countries may share the same island, they couldn't be anymore different. Right now, the Dominican Republic is ahead of Haiti in practically everything. However, the Dominican Republic is still a developing economy and they still have a long way to go, but they are headed there. I'd like to see Haiti catch up to the Dominican Republic one day, it'll be a rough road but hopefully one day Haiti can achieve stability.
  • @NeoCoreSaturn
Honestly, as someone from the neighbouring Jamaica I'm worried about the current state Haiti is going through. I really hope it doesn't become a failed state and hopefully pulls through
  • @jayjasperjp
In 1950, Haiti and the Dominican Republic had nearly identical rates of poverty and GDP per capita. But since then, the DR’s economy has grown tremendously while Haiti remains poor and underdeveloped. The gap between the two countries is now wider than ever
  • @jpe1
5:01 “Haiti has a much lower life expectancy.” (Shows 72.9 for Haiti and 64 for The Dominican Republic) 🤔 Perhaps the numbers got swapped
  • @jvmade84
Great work. One thing I’d like to add…most videos comparing both countries always mention the massacre of the 30s from the DR to Haitians. This is sad and accurate. However, it should also be mentioned that Haiti invaded the DR 6 times while the DR never invaded Haiti. Not only did they do this, but they did it in a very gruesome way. One of the worst atrocities is called “degüello de moca”…degüello means beheading and Moca is a town in the north of DR. There are great videos on it but not sure if any are in English. Basically Haitians beheaded everyone in that town especially the white people…including women and children. This is something the DR govt purposely leaves out of elementary thru HS leaving it only to scholars and college level in order to avoid hate. I don’t justify xenophobia or mistreatment of Haitians but the tension between both countries lies especially in the history and it bothers me when people just chalk it up to pure “racism.” You did not do this and I thank you for that. You kept it objective…just wanted to give you that little piece of little known history even amongst Dominicans.

The DOminican Republic is also Host to la Universidad Autonoma De Santo Domingo, which started as a Sunday School around the time of the First Colony in the 1500s, evolving to become the Oldest Educational Institution in the Western Hemesphere. Although that series of Occupations by the Haiti pretty much shut the school down, but it was able to be revived after the War of Independence, and continues to run today.
  • @velileon101
I remember as a kid in Dominican Republic I saw a Haitian hiding in a mattress in the back of a truck trying to get by a checkpoint, forgot if it was in the eastern part of DR or what not, but my entire childhood I was friends with older haitian men that worked for my Dad's construction company. Very hardworking and humble country, that Haiti is.
  • I’ve lived in haiit for most of my life, and am now studying in the Dominican Republic, living in both countries isn’t really different in terms of living expenses, however u seem to spend more money in Haiti, due to the lack of infrastructure (water, electricity, etc) u spend 5 times more everywhere just because the country doesn’t provide and everything is imported. The electricity is almost non existent in Haiti people run their properties on generators almost 24/7, water isn’t fed through pipes it’s brought to your house in a truck and put in a reservoir on property and all this really ramps up your spending. It’s not cheap either to pay these “basic” services.
  • Dominican Republic all day 🇩🇴, great people, great food, great environment, relatively affordable goods and services. One of the most underrated countries to visit outside the US.
  • @Illuso07
I’m Haitian, thanks for the educational content mr beat
  • Baseball is a huge economic driver for the Dominican Republic. Kid's are trained from a very early age to play the game. The player's that make it to the MLB send home a lot of money. The game has done a lot of good for the community. On the negative side.... A lot of kids never make it to the MLB. Those kids do not get a lot of education in anything else. All that they know how to do is play baseball.
  • @LW-qb2bx
I live in Dominican Republic! Great video. You mention both countries as being high crime, and while that's true, the power of gangs and the level of violence and gang warfare is Haiti is off the charts compared with here.
