On June 5th, 2024 I decided to go to Ayer for the afternoon after earlier in morning I planned to go to Palmer but it didn't go as planned. Right as I got to Ayer station, there was a lot of action in the yard but nothing was moving out on the mainline. Nothing was coming through until I decided to head over to Shirley after seeing Norfolk Southern B101 coming out on the wye. When I got to Shirley, the first train I saw was MBTA Outbound 411 with F40PH-3C number 1031 leading. A few minutes later, MBTA Inbound 414 came through with CTC-5 number 1808 leading towards Boston. By the, B101 hasn't left Ayer so I drove back to the station, and as I was driving it was already heading west so I went to Patterson Road in Shirley to see them. They crawled through with SD60E number 6965 leading. The dead period then showed up with no trains at all for about an hour and a half. I decided to see MBTA Outbound 415 at Sculley Road in Ayer. It flew by with F40PH-3C number 1053 with a friendly engineer. Just after they cleared, FI-1, the fitchburg local, headed west with cars so I decided to chase them to Shirley but unfortunately didn't get photos or videos. I went a bit further west to try and see them again at North Leominster but missed them. I headed back to Ayer and went to Wagon Wheel where I saw NS 16R sitting at the crossing. They moved a bit as they worked SanVel with SD60E 6957 leading. The next train wasn't until an hour later. I saw MBTA Outbound 419 with GP40MC 1127 leading. 30 minutes later, I saw MBTA Inbound 422 with CTC-4 number 1706 lead towards Boston. Then the last two trains of the day were both MBTA trains. The first one I saw was at Snake Hill Road. There, I saw MBTA Outbound 421 with F40PH-3C number 1074 lead towards Wachusett. The last train I saw was MBTA Inbound 424 that led CTC-4 number 1811, the veterans car, through Sandy Pond Road. That wrapped up an awesome day out on the rails!
