How To Hinge a Lid | The Toolbox Project #12

Publicado 2021-04-29
In this video, I’ll show you how to hinge the lid on the toolbox. This is a slightly different installation to what is done traditionally. Because with these hinges, we’re aiming to make the lid stop at 95 degrees, without the aid of any additional mechanisms.

As always, if you need more information on this stage or would like to know how to do this by hand, take a look at the supporting resources below.

WHAT IS THE FREE ONLINE WOODWORKING SCHOOL?

When designing the online course, Matt wanted to make it as close as possible to his own experience learning at Rycotewood Furniture Centre in Oxford. Primarily, by providing a structured course that anyone can follow, without having to find their own way through an arbitrary list of videos on YouTube.

You are the only seriously capable carpenter I have found on YouTube today of countering a dozen other crappy 'professionals' spreading lots of simple erratic methods and inconscient of their fails popping up all over. I had almost given up when I found You. Very glad to follow Your series without getting disturbed by all errors displayed by those other fakes and the superlative comments from their adoring hapless fanbase.

I enjoyed the problem solving section of this video the most, really cool to see your entire process. Thanks for sharing.
  • @MrMemusashi
I really learned something helpful in this video. The misalignment of the hing and how to fix was really good.

A trully helpful masterclass about this topic. Thanks and cheers from Argentina!

This is one of the best videos I've seen on how to do by hand .
  • I’m so pleased to have found your generous instruction. Truly a pleasure. Thank you Sir!

I like the way you shared adjustment of hinges with screw elimination Nice work Matt.

The video on cleaning up hinges made me go buy so cheap ones from my local. They needed a lot of work. Now sitting in a box waiting for a project like this.

Hi Matt, extremely impressive tutorial. You have shown several of the problems I've faced and how to fix them - great stuff, cheers bud!

Matt, after a couple of viewing of this specific video, I was successful in using less expensive hinges to finish a wedding box for cards. I was really frustrated with attempts to locate reasonably priced stop hinges online; they are out there but $$$ pricy. And fit was so good with the first pilot holes (only from your guidance, not from my skill) my box was about 10x16x5" I'll let you figure the metric conversion. Thanks for your extremely clear instructions in this video, still helping a couple of years down the road.
  • @thorlaug
That was a really good video and precisely what I needed to finally fasten the lid
  • @peakhour
the moment you start whittling oak into tiny dowels is the moment I call it a day and come back tomorrow :)
  • @SD45-ET44AC
Piano hinge installations; lucky me, I used scotch magic tape, centered the length at the middle of the two edges, screwed two screws on either side of hinge drilled, screwed and it worked
  • @ericmcrory4668
I've finally found the video which shows how to correct hinge installation issues. The most common problem I've had when installing butt hinges on boxes is that after the hinge mortises have been carved out, the lid may have slight misalignment when closed. You show how to find the offending screw and how to fix the problem. Videos that only show a perfect installation are not quite as helpful as your video. Thanks, and I plan to watch the rest of your hinge videos, as I'm sure I will take away a pearl of knowledge!
