"Hollywood is a place where they'll pay you a thousand dollars for a kiss and fifty cents for your soul." - Marilyn Monroe

Sometimes I forget she’s talking about “history” because every story in one way shape or form is still happening today

What is even sadder to me about Judy's abortion is that she was married. We're not even dealing with a pregnancy out of wedlock. Society at that time wouldn't have looked down on her being pregnant. She wanted to be pregnant. It just breaks my heart that she went through that.
  • The history of tattoos would be interesting. The upper British class back in the Victorian ages had tattoos: reportedly including the mother of Winston Churchill

Can’t believe this isn’t several hours long. You’ll need a series since Hollywood was and is a cesspool of dark depravity.
  • I hope I'm not alone in saying there should definitely be a part 2 of this!!!

If Bailey actually published a dark history book I’d buy it in a heartbeat.

Judy's story is so devastating. I can't imagine how hard that must have been.

We need a Marilyn Monroe Story Bailey! Talk about mysterious and conspiracies! ❤️

It breaks my heart that Judy Garland was forced to have two abortions. Babies that she really wanted but the people in control of her career wouldn't allow it. Heartbreaking.

Judy Garland was literally the saddest Hollywood story to me. Like her entire life no one stood up for her and no one was ever in her corner. Just heartbreaking.

I feel like Britneys ordeal wasn’t much different from what LB Mayer, his ‘people’ and her mother did to Judy. They were both very young when they were pushed into ‘the business’ by their parents. They were both sexualized as teens. They were both drugged. They were both forced to work long hours. They were both body shamed and forced into or out of relationships. They were both intimidated and threatened to do shows/jobs they didn’t want to do. They both suffered consequences when and if they didn’t obey. In some ways it was worse for Judy, in some ways worse for Britney.
  • Judy Garland was a cousin of my grandma, and she told me when I was little that all the distant family knew Judy was being abused badly AND NO ONE SPOKE UP because the entire family benefitted from her. They came from a very poor background. The part at the end about Rita at the beach with the kids literally made me tear up. That is the saddest thing ever.

The fact that Judy died from the same pills the studio forced her to take, says it all

when she talked about how poorly the actresses were treated all I could think about was about how trainees who want to be kpop idols are treated. Very sad this is still happening today.
  • Phew... I hear these stories and it makes me so sad. I wanted to be a singer/actress when I was a kid. A part of me still wishes for it. But when I auditioned, a couple of scouts told me I was too innocent for the business. Everyone is too innocent for the business. The business chews you up and spits you out into the gutters when they're done with you.
  • Judy Garland's entire life reads like a Greek tragedy, a shame nobody went to prison for it.
  • @raeflack
I wish you had included Peg Entwistle. The actress who took her life jumping off the Hollywood sign in 1932.
  • @nolachick5046
Yeah this still goes on today. The entertainment industry abuses everyone, from the actors on down to the laborers (the unions are pretty ineffectual tbh) My husband works in the business and I'm disgusted by the things I've learned. Sad that ppl still find it glamorous.
  • @rachelb701
If you haven't read it, I highly recommend "The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo.'" It's a fictional take on old Hollywood but there are parts taken from a lot of the actresses and their experiences you mentioned in this episode! It's an amazing book.
