Lyrics:
Aye, Calypso, the place's you've been to
The things that you've shown us, the stories you tell
Aye, Calypso, I sing to your spirit
The men who have served you so long and so well

Does anyone else still get a lump in their throat whenever they hear John Denver?

Every time I see this song, I am amazed at the upper register that John Denver had. Not only that he could hit those notes at his age, but that he hit them pitch-perfect, and kept them completely in-tune. What a truly gifted performer and musician. The world was a better place for him being in it, and is a little less bright and free in his absence...
  • For a man told he would never make it. NOT BAD YEAH. rest peacefully Mr Denver.

John Denver will always hold a special place in my heart. When I was a child (in fourth grade, to be specific), my class sent him a list of questions. The man actually took the time to send us a video recording of himself answering the questions. Bear in mind, this was pre-internet, so I mean he recorded a VHS and sent it to our school for us. Great man.
  • John Denver's voice is just like a sunny day with not one cloud in the sky!

While listening to this, close your eyes. You can visualize being on the boat, in the open ocean, dolphins following in the wake, gentle breeze etc.

To this day, John Denver remains unparalleled. His was a unique talent. Much respect ✊.
  • Henry John Deutschendorf Jr has never sounded better.
  • Is it just me....? Or is this man the greatest singer/songwriter who ever graced this earth?

His tribute to Jaques Cousteau Is amazing Growing up during the 70's Mr. Cousteau opened up a new world of oceanography to all of us He is a legend
  • I miss the idealism of 60s and 70s music! This song still gives me chills. RIP John Denver!
  • I named my daughter Calypso after John Denver and the marine biology vessel with Jacques Cousteau. She’s 12 now and knows the meaning of her name.

I love that song May John and Captain Cousteau Rest in Peace. God Bless Them Both They both was men that me love the sea and music.

I was lucky enough to be able to see John Denver in concert. Once indoor, once outdoor (much better outdoor)
  • That’s it, I’ve made an ‘executive decision’- when I’m feeling really down, I mean REALLY down, I’m gonna play/listen to this- one of the most uplifting songs I’ve ever heard, thank you John! ❤

A true honor and privilege for anyone to have been at that concert .
  • My absolute favorite of John's songs. I'm a born sailor. The opening line, the entire song just speaks to me. "To sail on a dream, on a crystal clear ocean, to ride on the crest of a wild raging storm". I've done that and when he sings that line it brings so much back to me. My boat's have always been named "Windsong" after one of John's albums. In fact, the very first boat, I took the album cover to the painter so that the name, when painted, could look on the sides of the boat like it did on the album cover. I'm without a boat now but I have my eye on one and 40 years later I still have that 33 1/3 album cover and that name will be painted on the side of the boat the same way, with one difference. This last boat will be named "Windsong, Forever".
  • 23 years gone and I still miss his beautiful gift. I grew up listening to his music. His songs always could take me away to a faraway place. RIP John

I was lucky to attend John Denver concert at Red Rocks ampitheater. He sang this song and we all sang with him. Magical time.
