The whole point of having the wife and kids there was to give Muzan a false sense of security that nothing too extreme would happen

If he had the kids escape then Muzan wouldn't have walked into the trap. He DID think there was a trap, but he didn't think it would be that deadly because his nemesis's wife and children were still around.

Gyomei is built different. Everyone else cuts demon heads, but gyomei just explodes them into pieces. Added bonus that it was Muzan's, the strongest demon. GOATMEI #1

the walk sets the tone and defines muzan as the villian reminding us that he's the goat. With the smoke i think its just part of the village a spell kind of sort to hide the village from being detected and muzan just walking through that barrier.
