Kanamara Matsuri is the notorious Japanese Penis Festival of Kawasaki. Originally, it was a Spring Festival for bamboo shoots but in 1969 (snicker!) it became focused on sex and awareness of sexual diseases particularly HIV in later years.

The local legend tells of a girl who had a demon in her mmm-mmh that bit off the hoo-hoos of two husbands. A blacksmith fashioned a steel phallus and the demon broke its teeth on it forcing it to flee.

The Kanamara Festival is held the first Sunday in April with the procession leaving the shrine around 11:30.
