Japanese History Festival - Nara Heijokyo Tenpyosai 年春 天平祭

Published 2024-06-14
Tenpyosai Matsuri is a festival celebrating Nara's heyday as the first permanent capital of Japan when it was known as Heijo-kyo. Nara was the official capital from 710-794 (though technically Nagaoka-kyo was attempted as a new capital from 784 before deciding on Kyoto).

A procession of guards and Japanese Emperors goes to and from Suzakumon Gate which was part of the old Heijo palace.

Various Tenpyosai events take place 4 times a year. This one takes place during Golden Week from May 3rd. This particular one was in 2022 when Japan was still closed off and many of the participants wore specially made masks.

Due to copyright issues I had to put a remake song over the juggling section so the audio may seem a little wonky.
