Why the Glacier Peak Volcano Could be the Biggest Threat to the USA you Haven't Heard About

Although quiet for hundreds of years, learn what an eruption could look like from Glacier Peak in Washington State, and just how in the dark we are about if it will happen. To complicate the matter, the volcano is in a wilderness area, meaning installing this monitoring requires significant thought and review as to how it will impact the environment. How can these important aspects be balanced?

  • Thank you for your information. I appreciate all the information I can get.
  • In the summer of 2022, the government gave the green light to put in 4 seismometer stations, giving better data and warning indications of any increased, shallower earthquakes (finally!).
  • Glacier Peak is the only stratovolcano in the lower 48 states that can have a VEI-7 eruption.
  • Not far from people... I get a kick out of this comment! I live like 30 minutes away from it alongside 823k others in Snohomish county... Not to mention another 8-900k people in neighboring counties... But you know... Remote and deep in the cascades. lol
  • Seems to require a precedent that would probably later impact many other wilderness areas.
  • Update Forest Service gives the green light for more monitoring on Glacier Peak

The road up to Kennedy hot spring needs to be replowed. Its not a big deal except they think they are going to reclaim all the roads that access the wilderness areas. And it is so rugged that the road needs to be in place to mitigate forest fires.

The forestry service had roads that use to get up pretty far into that area. But like most governments they don’t want people to access the places we pay for.
