The Survivor 45 Auction Is A Massive Cause For Concern

Published 2023-11-20
When the news came out that for the first time in 15 seasons that we would have the Survivor auction back I like many fans was joyous. Finally we would go from the robotic advantage centred ideology perpetuated by the prior four seasons of the modern era to greener pastures. No longer would there be extremely convoluted twists or contestants needlessly losing their votes right? Needless to say, as the title suggests, this auction was just super worrying…

"Survivor" is a popular reality television show that has been captivating audiences around the world for many years. The show's concept revolves around a group of contestants, often around 16 to 20 individuals, who are marooned in a remote and challenging location, such as an island, jungle, or desert. These contestants are usually divided into two or more tribes at the beginning of the game.

The primary goal of the show is for contestants to outwit, outplay, and outlast their fellow competitors in order to win a cash prize and the title of "Sole Survivor." The show is known for its compelling characters, dramatic twists, and strategic gameplay. Contestants often face physical hardships, interpersonal conflicts, and moral dilemmas as they navigate the challenges of the game. "Survivor" has a loyal fan base and has spawned numerous seasons, each set in a different location with its own unique challenges. It has become a cultural phenomenon and a cornerstone of the reality TV genre. The host is known as Jeff Probst and is also the lead director.

  • Firstly did you subscribe? 👀 But second I really want to push home the fact that I am happy the auction is back (of course!) I've never got to experience watching an auction on Survivor live as I've only been part of the community for 5 years and this did still have its fun moments like Bruce, Emily's twerking and the fish eye. But...can it be improved? Absolutely and this video is me looking at how we could improve it so its not as "clunky" as Survivor 45. I made my suggestions on how to improve the format but please share yours!

Survivor...can we stop taking away contestants' votes...please?
  • @Geswert72
I'm glad someone is pointing out how that one rule completely invalidates the auction. It's crazy to me that so many people are just satisfied to see the auction back. There was no bidding, and the person who lost their vote was decided the minute Jeff drew a rock. I find it hard to believe they didn't realize this ahead of time that losing a vote is so dramatic people will dump their money immediately. There are any number of ways to encourage careful bidding. Maybe the person who buys the most items gets an advantage? Or hell, make it the immunity challenge and most successful bidder immune. If they want to keep advantages completely out of it, then just make it a normal auction with food. So close and yet so far

If they were dead set on someone losing their vote, they could've attached it as a "bonus" to one item without having to derail the entire auction for it. That stupid "person with most money loses their vote" tweak completely broke the auction far more than advantages ever did.

Im hoping this was just a misstep in them trying to combine the auction with vote losses and twists. Literally the entire auction is fixed if you remove the vote loss twist here. I personally REALLY like the challenge to decide buying power, but I can see that being a nuisance in the future. Either way the vote loss needs to go asap.
  • We have had a total of 1 tribal council where everyone was able to vote, and that was the tribal that someone literally quit Brando doesn’t really count for me because Austin had to play an advantage to be able to vote
  • @KartoffelHundin
If everyone had spent all their money (say the number on the rock was 12 and the last person with money spent it all on item 11, for example), would no one lose their vote?
  • This auction almost punished the players who get the middling amounts of money, like think about it what if Jeff drew like 7 and the contestants with the 6 highest sums of money can become safe screwing over the players that aren’t even necessarily the worst performers in the pre-challenge Bruce could have kept his vote had Jeff drawn any number below 8
  • @dallasoleary187
If you thought that was crap, what about the thing they showed in the preview for the next episode with the tribal immunity where the last tribe of 3 all lose their votes? I hate the tribal immunities once we get to the merge - if it's individual, let it be individual. But that twist coming on Wednesday is absolute garbage.
  • I think I can understand what they were trying to do, in motivating the players to spend their money after what happened years ago. I'd argue a better way to introduce an advantage or disadvantage would've been to hide it in one of the cash canisters so it's out of the way and the auction can just be fun.
  • @chuck2469
the auction was okay i think without the vote loss it would have been perfect IMO, i liked the no advantage angle and a scavenger hunt was fun.
  • @vyperrr7757
So the only thing is I think it's clear Jeff is SCARED of Australian Survivor and I don't see him ever taking inspiration from that show however it is an amazing suggestion to improve this auction.
  • @jackkolero
How about a mystery item which is lose-vote when revealed.
  • @tristanwhite2316
To be fair Emily loses her vote at 11 only because she doesn't spend all her money
  • @Adam-yn7bk
I liked this twist and I would rather have it than no auction but I do agree some of the elements of this new auction are very questionable
  • I think they should've introduced more bad items upfront. So then theyre faced with a dilemma of do I wait for something good, and potentially risk my vote?
  • @averyseldin8485
Again, the challenge for money was fun and I won't deny that Bruce somehow ending up with the most money by the end of it was funny, but this is a problem. I don't know what modern Survivor's gross love affair is with the idea of contestants losing their votes but it's getting old.
