My longest (and favorite) analysis video to date, taking a look at the three Shirou's of Fate/Stay Night, Unlimited Blade Works and Heaven's Feel next to their counterpart from Oath Under Snow.
WARNING: Disclaimers show up before each use, but this video does contain some footage from Heaven's Feel Part 2: Lost Butterfly. Make sure to skip to the timestamps onscreen if you want to avoid that.

So, just saying this now even before it gets unblocked, but I made a slight error crediting the music - Another Heaven is actually by Earthmind, not Cruz. So sorry for the mistake!

If Emiya’s the name, your happiness ain’t gonna be the same.

“This Shirou only want one thing: To take holds something he Love, acknowledge that is Real, and not Lose it” ...damn that hit me in the deep
  • @Spartan120
"People die when they are killed." - Selfish Dreamer "Just because you are correct doesn't mean you're right!" - Selfless Dreamer
  • @daffyhat
Who would've thought the Selfish Realist who lost everything including what made him Shiro and the Selfless Dreamer who almost defines what it means to be Shiro would have the most in common.
  • Can we just think for a second about how Shirou survived Enuma Elish, A Divine Weapon, which is capable of destroying worlds. Lol.
  • @JohnPeacekeeper
And funny enough, apart from the 5 young Shirous, we also have at least 3 Heroic Spirit Shirou Emiyas, and each of those are different and fascinating.
  • Using Meme: Fate: What Shirou wants to do UBW: What Shirou thinks he does HF: What others think Shirou does OUS: What Shirou actually does. Lol

also i believe ur not mentioning how much Miyu plays a role here... she’s the idea of the few that needs to be sacrificed for the many and she’s a young girl who hasn’t known how to live her life yet. we see scenes that Kiritsugu is willing to use her to save the world but Shirou slowly begins to develop feelings for Miyu and realizes that she’s just a child and chooses to raise her and let her at least experience what its like to live and be happy. Thus making the wish to teleport miyu to the Loli world where she could be happy

AH, NO, LOST BUTTERFLY CLIPS, I SAW TOO MUCH

I really like how the Miyu--verse Shirou adds to the equation. The different situation of the world he grew up in and his experiences shaped a very different person. It's weird how that Shirou was more isolated and yet wasn't as alone. By having someone to look after in Miyu he experienced changes. He had to keep her hidden and every day was a challenge against what ideal of being a hero he actually had. With her he saw the price that had to be paid. It wasn't just sacrificing an abstract few for an abstract many. It was being tasked with sacrificing his adopted sister's life for the abstract many. That's a different thing entirely. There are many versions of Shirou and I like many of them. The Oath Under Snow version may be my favorite though. He loses so much and has to drag himself up to try and save what he still has left. Using Archer's powers efficiently while turning away from the ideal that lead to that version of Shirou becoming a counter guardian in the first place.

all 4 Shirou Emiya’s are the same person?! NANI?!.... on a people die if they are killed note... The idea of Oath under snow Shirou was basically the idea of a “What If?”. In Fate Stay Night routes we always had a Shirou that wants to be a hero and save the MANY. Where as in Oath under snow we have Shirou seeing Julian being this hero but at the cost of killing Sakura and taking Miyu away, around that same time he realizes saving the many is breaking him thus he says before using the Archer card, “my ideals are shattering” he uses the card in response to not caring about saving the many anymore and instead chooses willingly to save the FEW and call himself the “villain” because he’s against the world

I felt very differently reading the visual novel to completion. I felt the Fate path was ultimately the "good ending". Maybe I was extrapolating, but I felt it was the only path where Shirou, fully, grew up. While all three of the girls reflect some inner turmoil of Shirou's back at him, I felt Arturia's was the most essential to his character, being the one who share's his core ideal of the flawless hero. The "Hero of Justice" he aspire's to be, less directly, is placed in front of his eyes, and he experiences her failure through her memories, and yet when he reflects on it near the end of the path, he "must admit, there could not have been a greater hero". I always took this to mean, Arturia, succeeded at her mission, and was the "Perfect King" she aspired to be, but even that left her feeling she had failed. I also felt it implied that this was in fact, the fate of all who had become servants. In effect the were all men who became legends, but lamented they had not become gods. All this to say, my take away from Fate, was fate itself. Not that all things are inevitable and chosen for you, but that no matter how hard you fight (Shirou), no matter how brilliant(Rin), gifted(Sakura), wealthy(Gilgamesh), wise(Cuchulain), or good(Arturia) you are, there are mountains you will not climb, struggles you will not over come, tragedies you won't stop, but you should fight anyway. Because the most beautiful thing about humanity, is our heroes, legends that light the abyss, like stars in the sky, and in the end, heroes are the ones who challenge fate, even if they always lose. I felt that only Shirou and Arturia, in the end of the "good ending" of the Fate path, learned this lesson.
  • The emiya family is just so sad, both of them touched my heart more then any other characters in anime ever.

I think the reason why he can't use UBW in HF (He mentions this when he uses nine lives blade works VN), is he says that archers world and mine is different so he cannot reproduce it. I think this means that because he never naturally learns projection (or visits archers UBW) so his internal world is fairly empty. he can use 'only the noble phatasms that Emiya Shirou has recorded' (similarly to the Fate Route where shirou can only project Caliburn, Avalon, Kanshou & Bakuya). He can't use archers UBW to get NPs to produce because of his seals applied to his left arm, after unsealing archers arm he can replicate Nine Lives by taking it from archers UBW whilst his mind fractures because of the strain of overusing projection. The reason why Shriou from OUS is so quickly being corrupted by Archer never had avalon inside him (Kiritsugu never joins the 4th holy grail war due to him looking for a holy grail to save mankind and the Matou head dies along with Zachary Ainzworth, whilst the Einzberns and Tohsakas we are unclear on their existence) meaning he could never learn projection and UBW properly so when he realises that his basic reinforcement magic (the only one that he seems to be able to use). When he got given the blank card just after Sakura is killed he sees a future self as hero he asks him to use his body and soul as the cost to ground and use archers skills. Which he accepts of course his appearance using the archer card is similar to angra mainyu in fate hollow attraxia (I think of this shirou as an avenger at heart). The reason he is so much better than other card users is he is let archers memories and skills possess him completely to the point OUS Shirou's soul and body (shown when he tries to use UBW the second time and his right arm and hair turn into archers body) is being overwritten by archer and eventually would become a young version of archer. This isn't true for anyone else they just use the characters instinct and reflexes for attacks. This occurs when Zachary Ainsworth using the Saber card uses excalibur one handed (This is implied that it would fail and break the arm of the user) Or when Angelica using Gilgameshs card uses his mountain felling sword inside against gils new incarnation (his kid version). In the same fight she tries to use the Enkidu aginst gil who takes control of it and pisses him off by trying to use it. Heroic Spirit Emiya liked this version of himself enough to agree to this contract as he thought his ideals were not so contrived and not so unattainable.

Another thing about Heaven's Feel Shirou, is that because he changed his ideal, Archer no longer needs to kill him. Also since their ideals are different, Shirou can't use Archers UBW.
  • People have been saying “Being an Emiya is suffering” but i disagree Having the camera capture you in a fate series is the end for you
