Lionsgate's Marvel Animated movies included one about Doctor Strange! Releasing 9 years before his debut on the big screen, this film unsurprisingly has a scary amount in common with its MCU counterpart... but also, in some ways this animated film is better than the live action Marvel Cinematic Universe one. Let's find out why!

It's crazy how they managed to make Dormammu AND Mordo villains without feeling overblown and wasting none of them.
  • Miss when marvel use to make animated movies like this. Remember Hulk vs Wolverine/Thor,

This movie was, in many ways, my introduction to the character, and while I'm not the biggest Dr. Strange fan, this movie is still one of my favourites. It was very sad, very epic, and contained some magical violence (that being, people being reduced to skeletons), and the costume is still one of my favorites.

I feel like "The SUPERIOR [Marvel Character] Is ANIMATED?" is a title template that could fit for most of Marvel's roster.

I wish they used the tragic backstory involving Strange's failed surgery on his sister in the MCU version. That would've added way more emotional depth for his "need to control" as well as an interesting dilemma to the question of if he could find happiness in DS 2. I like both iterations, but I hope MCU Strange continues to receive some development before Cumberbatch is done lol

I knew this masterpiece was better but I never hear anyone talk about this.

It’s so crazy how much is superior animated. The fact that people believe Earth’s Mightiest Heroes is superior to the mcu’s avengers proves that so much. If we’re being honest, most things are better animated than live action. Look at anime/other animated films. EDIT: Obviously I’m not saying live action stuff isn’t good. Simply that in some ways, animation can be better. So many films/shows prove that animation deserves its flowers. That’s all.
  • The animated movie is what made me a fan of Dr strange and it still better than what mcu gives
  • I was actually thinking about it lately - how well written the arrogant to humbled animated doctor strange was... The end for me was perfect as the ancient one gave his live to the winged marks and Dr.Strange faced Dormammu for the first time!
  • Doctor Strange is my favourite character, unfortunately I think the MCU’s portrayal of him has been underwhelming. I still like his movies, and Benedict Cumberbatch. I feel like the magic isn’t ‘weird’ enough, and he’s mainly used for plot devices.
  • I wish Dr. Strange made an appearance on Avengers: Earth's mightiest heroes. We were so close to getting a fully realized marvel universe in animation.
  • I think both versions (MCU and Animated) are pretty cool, however, while I love Strange development in animated film, I think the MCU does a better job building his fight with Dormammu, with Strange in the end saving the day not by shooting laser on the villain, but by using his intelligence and using time stone. This helps to show why Strange is the sorcerer supreme: It's not because he's the most powerful or a choosen one, it's because of his creativity in the ways he uses his magic.

i was kinda annyoed that they just got rid of his sister in the backstory cause it added so much depth on why he became a surgeon and why he became so bitter to everyone

The fact that the brick wall sequence wasn't in the live action movie was such a bummer. It was such a powerful way to humble Strange and get him to open up to the whole process, and it would've made the live action one so much better.

It's lovely to see that SOMEONE else knows about this movie! I loved the animated version better too. He was deeper and it felt more true to the source material in all of the right ways.
  • I love the backstory with his sister and what made him so arrogant that's one thing that better than kive action movie

The animated Dr. Strange movie made me into a Dr. Strange fan as a kid and when the live action movie came out I had hoped they would take various story beats from the animated movie because it was fantastic especially Strange’s backstory with his sister. We only got a mention of her in MoM but the animated movie just made his arrogance and the need to be right way better. Still like the 2016 movie but it would have hit harder if they took elements from the animated movie
  • I loved this version of Strange, my favorite part was the scene with the Wall and Ancient One explaining how magic works and Strange finally understanding it through metaphors and visuals, which made the fact that he eventually became so powerful more believeable. Also the stuff with his sister made Strange more tragic and explained his cold behavior

5:12 I think the most devastating thing about this is for the character it would feel like a foundation of professional failure as well as personal
