Published 2023-01-15
In this video I replace a failed Cat VR1 voltage regulator with a new Basler AVC63-12.

  • Hey Mike, Good to see you posting again! Always enjoy watching you put those big gensets through their paces! I'm already looking forward to the next one!

Resistive load bank only load test the engine, not the generator. It takes verry little excitation to make rated voltage no power factor. Put 8% lag load and you will see the nameplate excitation. I worked for Michigan Cat for 43 years as a E P G Field tec. Those things are bullet profe. But you should see about 12 volts no load @ reted voltage to make sure all is good in the excitation system. Glad you are back.
  • Good to see you, Mike! Excellent presentation here. Always enjoy your videos. Recently retired from 36 years Operating Engineer at a major OKC hospital. We ran mostly Waukesha Pearce units, Onan's and a few Cats, for a total of 7,500 KW. Was exciting work, HOT, but exciting. I miss it already! Will be watching for your next presentation.
  • It's good to see you again! And, it's good to see that you can get replacements for obsolete electronics on these machines. I must say, it's an impressive result, and considering the load that's being switched on and off, that engine barely flinched at all. That's going to be a good genset for someone.

Glad to see you back online, hope everything’s been ok!
  • @DorfGarage
Finally you are good and we have a new video! Thanks!
  • Careful with fuses in the sensing lines, if one of them blows voltage will go up until smoke comes out everywhere, lots of collateral damage.
  • @blobscott
That was great! It's always good to see someone who knows what they're doing working on these machines.
  • Glad you're back Mike....from another Mike LOL. That CAT's not even breaking a sweat and sounds great. Great explanations as always.

I LOVE THE NEW WIRING AND COMPONENTS , LOOKS SO CLEAN AND NEAT !
  • It Is so comfortiable To Watch this video when someone knowes what their talking about . You are the best. Mike Makowsky

Im currently doing a full controller upgrade on an old 60kw Generac, went up in smoke on me during a diagnoses for no remote start. The entire generator control harness was melted and fused together. It needed a new governor controller and actuator, as the original Generac stepper motor needed inputs from the original control module, which is obsolete. So I have a new deep sea controller installed, engine running at 60hz, and the next step is to get the new Generac AVR working. It also requires ballast resistors, and in the schematic it shows a rectifier in the field circuit as well, so Im assuming the AVR does not put out a straight DC voltage for the field.
  • Nice to have you back. Sometimes life just gets in the way. Your knowledge of the voltage control circuitry and substitute regulation systems is mighty impressive.

My favorite channel! You deserve a lot more subs.
  • @Vectrum0013
good to see a new video, your wiring is always good looking

Great to see your back, I was getting kinda worried you were well. I watch James Condon every week and got your link from his recommendations . More videos soon I hope. Many thanks Tony Quinn.
