The Russ problem was easy to figure out from the start. George Paton hired a coach (Nathaniel Hackett) who's offensive runs best with a quarterback who gets the ball out of his hands quickly and plays on schedule. George Patton then traded for a quarterback who is the exact opposite of the type of quarterback his coach needed. Then George Patton fired that coach, and brought in yet another coach who needs his quarterback to play on schedule. Basically, doubling down on the original problem. It's a simple explanation that has been overblown into a complex mystery.

1st down was a 2 yard run, 2nd down was a 4 yard sack because Russ could never see the wide open receiver 8-12 yards in the middle of the field, 3rd down was a holding penalty because Russ put his linemen in bad positions, repeated 3rd down after penalty was a 20+ yard throw out of necessity. O-line would have been rated way higher if Russ would have ever gotten rid of the ball on schedule or found the wide open receiver. Every position group has improved, and the coaching staff is much better and has continuity. With a QB that can keep the chains moving and keep an improved defense off the field, it should help make the team more competitive than a lot of people think. The team is in the midst of a rebuild, that is not in question, but the garbage squad that was on the field last season was somehow able to eke out 8 wins in spite of all of their problems. This team will hopefully field a better squad on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball. And one overlooked factor that may also play into the Broncos favor is the new kickoff rule where opposing kickers may struggle adjusting to having to kick it a little softer and it may fall either short of the twenty yard line for a penalty or they may still make it fly into the end zone in the lighter air for a penalty. Either way, at least kick offs will be worth watching instead of just watching kickers try to see if they can kick the ball to Littleton or Broomfield every single time.
