👩🏽‍💻 I'm Dr. Becky Smethurst, an astrophysicist at the University of Oxford (Christ Church). I love making videos about science with an unnatural level of enthusiasm. I like to focus on how we know things, not just what we know. And especially, the things we still don't know. If you've ever wondered about something in space and couldn't find an answer online - you can ask me! My day job is to do research into how supermassive black holes can affect the galaxies that they live in. In particular, I look at whether the energy output from the disk of material orbiting around a growing supermassive black hole can stop a galaxy from forming stars.

If you're having issues with the sound on this video with your speaker set up, turn off your bass speaker. It sounds fine on a laptop or phone. In the meantime, through trial & error I'll try to figure out if its my new shotgun mic, the not yet fully furnished office/studio space with more echo than I'd like, or something in the edit that caused the issue for those of you with more sophisticated audio set ups.

Better Help is extremely problematic with serious privacy, ethics, and quality of care concerns. I really wish you would consider looking for other sponsors.
  • It's cool that you compare Chandra's budget to an F-16 because the F-16 was specifically designed to be *cheap*. So that really highlights how budgetarily unimpactful Chandra is. I'm a US citizen, so I feel morally obligated to Get Noisy here.
  • @annafdd
Adding my voice to those urging you to reconsider accepting sponsorship from Better Help. People need good, qualified, available mental health, especially here in the UK, not the Uber of counselling that will sell their very private and sensitive data to all and sundry.
  • @nemomenth
But you can help save the Chandra telescope. I with bet that a bunch of people here in the USA (me included) didn't even know we could help save it. Your videos spread the word and mobilizes people who can work to make a difference. TY!
  • @drhxa
I signed the petition and wrote to my reps. It took 1 min of my time by following the link in the description. Hope you all in the US did too. And thank you Dr. Becky for bringing this issue to my attention :)
  • As the NASA Adminstrator told the US Congress yesterday, the NASA budget for the Science Division has been cut by about $2.7 billion dollars for the US Government years 2024 and 2025, so they have hard choices to make. People resident in the USA contacting their members of Congress can make a difference as Congress makes the final decisions on the budget.

I know Betterhelp pays the bills, but you really should drop it.

The problem I see with better help, and with mental health care in general is that the people who need it the most are the least likely to have the insurance or money to afford it. And the “free” healthcare system is atrocious. Most mental illness CANNOT be treated properly in just a few sessions.

Better Help is terrible with patient data. Not the best company
  • Please everyone don't use better help, the service is just awful and there are serious confidentially concerns. I'm quite surprised a channel like this is pushing it, most unethical as the minimum research will show you how bad it is.
  • Thanks for heads up on the Chandra telescope. I will send my Representatives and Senators a note (they often hear from me about other things [Ukraine], so this should be a change for them).
  • @robdave1974
Thank you for considering us in the Southern Hemisphere. I know there isn’t a lot of us , but even our own news sources often don’t take into consideration our position. And often even report on celestial events that we cannot even observe.
  • Please reconsider your partnership with better help, they are a predatory organization that has taken the commercialization of people's anxieties and mental health struggles to an unprecedented and unethical level. I am afraid that I will have to rescind my subscription and support for your content if you choose to keep them as a sponsor.
  • @Arcturus5847
jsyk better help is. not a great company. as in, sharing patient records and not vetting their "therapists" properly. theres a looot of stories if you care to go searching for them and i recommend you do since a lot of ppl arent thrilled that they keep popping up in your videos
  • "BBC asking for an interview but I said, "no."" Huh? What's the backstory on that little bomb?
  • @patchvonbraun
I was involved with the Internet Engineering Task Force for something like 13 years. We had a tradition of issuing an April 1st "RFC" (which is what the standards documents are called). There have been several amusing ones over the years. My fave was done by my then IETF colleague, Steven Bellovin on the "Evil Bit".
