Beginner Hang Gliding Owen’s Valley

Publicado 2024-06-07
My 16th mountain flight! This one was special because it was in a totally new (flying) location for me! What made it even more special was the fact that I have hiked and driven this area a lot before so seeing it from the sky was amazing! Since lift conditions can get pretty aggressive later in the day in the Owen's valley (great for long flights) as a beginner my goal was to land before the lift really turned on. I launched around 0900 while the sun was not heating up the ground and generating too much lift. I was really happy with this flight and finally getting to zip up my harness! This was also my first mountain flight with my new (to me) glider! A Wills Wing Falcon 4 170 which I flew two flights at the training hill with about a week before this flight.

Fuck yeah! Awesome! & thank u for showing me the bailout! Everyone’s videos are like 100 miles, but what happens if u sink out? Now I know.😅

That awesome. You know, about 3 days ago a very experienced paraglider pilot pulled off a triangle over 300km launched from Walt’s, flew up to the whites and white mountain peak and flew back down to lone pine. 10 hours in the air, getting to over 17k’ absolutely incredible stuff.

What a nice place!!! Cool happineas shouts!! ahah.. Probably your smoothest flight, smooth air. Nice cooments about what goes through your mind, also about equipment ajustments e body positioning. 🤙

thank you for sharing your adventures and understanding the thermal I'm reading fifty ways to fly better from Bruce goldsmith and understanding the sky and it's so great how long we take to understand how movements go in our flight, now i understand that really we need patient and time and fly, fly, fly baby fly. keep storing your memories here where i can see it hahaaaa.

You’re gonna love that glider… I know I do 😁🦅 What a nice place to fly at! Next time, if you know you have the altitude, do some 360 clearing turns and show off the area please👍

Your landings will be better if you get your hands higher up on the downtubes where you have some authority. If you ever land with a slight tailwind, you’ll thank me😜👍
  • Just curious why you didn't land at Diaz lake just south of Lone Pine? Nice big area just next & south of the lake and an easy glide. Usually good thermals are at Walts Point, where you launched, and would be a few 1000 over in just a few minutes. A single point hang harness is way more aerodynamic than all those strands/cords. I always liked my CG 1000 harness. I'm not sure if they're still made, but each one is custom made for your body.

looks amazing. how you putting the stats on the video and what vario you using?
  • @jheissjr
How far is the drive from LZ to launch at Owens? Do you live near Owens?
  • So much altitude on thermal conditions. You will stay up for a long time. Just wait. Where is your vario? Did not see any mounted on frame.
