It's not only the athletes representing Team GB who are having their 'Olympic moment' at the Paris Games. In a remarkable twist of fate, Team GB's boxing physician Harj Singh and physiotherapist Robbie Lillis have emerged as unlikely saviors after they intervened to save the life of Tulkin Kilichev, the head coach of Uzbekistan's boxing squad.
The event transpired during Kilichev's celebration of his boxer Hasanboy Dusmatov's gold medal triumph over France's Billal Bennama, in the warm-up zone at Roland Garros on Thursday evening. The joyful scene quickly escalated into a critical incident when Kilichev collapsed, suffering from cardiac arrest.
Acting swiftly with remarkable precision, Dr. Singh and Mr. Lillis rushed to assist Kilichev. Dr. Singh commenced CPR immediately, while Mr. Lillis enlisted and utilized a defibrillator to deliver a shock. Their rapid response played a crucial role in reviving Kilichev.
Mr. Lillis recounted the frantic moment, stating, 'The Uzbek coaching team returned to the warm-up zone, and while they were celebrating, a different kind of shouting emerged, that was not celebratory at all. There was a desperate call for a doctor, for help. Harj was the first to react, and I followed with the emergency trauma bag we carry with us.'
He added, 'Many coaches were visibly shaken, but we remained focused. I placed the pads of the defibrillator on Kilichev and delivered the shock. At first, he didn't respond, but after Harj continued CPR, about 20 to 30 seconds later, he suddenly regained consciousness, which was fantastic.'
Kilichev was subsequently taken to the hospital by the venue's medical personnel, where he is reportedly in stable condition. The incident has profoundly affected those present. Dr. Singh conveyed the emotional weight of the situation, saying it 'really changes your perspective' and mentioned the desire to visit Kilichev during his recovery. 'Everything unfolded so rapidly,' Dr. Singh remarked. 'We hope to visit the hospital. If it can be arranged, it would be a deeply emotional moment for both of us.'
The secretary general of Uzbekistan's boxing federation, Shohid Tillaboev, took to Instagram to convey his relief and appreciation, referring to the gold medal victory as 'the happiest moment' yet acknowledging that the celebrations were subdued due to Kilichev's absence. 'He's the greatest mentor! He truly is a hero,' Tillaboev expressed.
In reflecting on the event, Mr. Lillis shared that the rush of adrenaline kept him awake that night but underscored his gratitude for the opportunity to make a meaningful impact. 'This isn't my usual role, and I wouldn't want to make a habit of it, but fortunately, with my training, I was able to respond effectively,' he said. 'My mum said something lovely; she mentioned, 'That's your Olympic moment.' It's something I'll certainly hold onto, and I don't think I'll be forgetting it anytime soon.'
This extraordinary act of bravery by Dr. Singh and Mr. Lillis showcases the critical importance of the intense training that Team GB's medical staff undergo at the UK Sports Institute, where they routinely prepare for such high-pressure scenarios. Their valor at the Paris Games serves as a tribute to their commitment, expertise, and quick decision-making, ensuring that Tulkin Kilichev will have the opportunity to celebrate many more successes in the time to come.
