“A land without a people, and a people without a land” is how the relationship between Palestine and the Jewish people was described by Christian writers in the 1800s. And the 20th-century history of the Middle East has largely been written through these eyes.

But this film from Al Jazeera Arabic looks at Palestine from a different angle. It hears from historians and witness accounts, and features archive documents that show Palestine as a thriving province of Greater Syria and the Ottoman Empire at the dawn of the 20th century.

The evidence suggests that its cities had a developing trade and commercial sector, growing infrastructure, and embryonic culture that would enable it to meet the challenges of the decades ahead.

However, the political ramifications of the Balfour Declaration, San Remo Conference and British Mandate set in motion a series of events that profoundly affected this vibrant, fledgeling society and led to the events of 1948 and beyond.

This film is the other side of the Palestinian story.

After witnessing Palestinian protests over the years I assumed they were just fanatics. But this last week I decided that when two parties are involved, there are 2 stories to tell. Over the past few days I’ve watched documentaries like yours which convinced me I had misjudged the Palestinian cause. This is a case of injustice which began long ago and caused a lot of suffering. The shameful behavior of the Allies to conspire against them proves once again how self-serving interests overcome what is judicious. I will support the Palestinian people.

Here in Greece, our parliament voted to recognize the Palestinian state back in 2015. All parties agreed for the first time to something, but no government since then upheld that decision. Now government and media, are trying to deform the truth about the heroic Palestinians, but we the people of Greece, are standing with them. Fredom to Palestine.

As a Bulgarian I'm grateful for all the documentation and evidence that has been preserved, helping us make sense of the past and not forget how things used to be. In all honesty, I don't understand how anyone could ever believe that the region was "a land without people", some underdeveloped desert. One doesn't need to have studied too much about history or how human civilisation develops to have one look at the map and know that this was a cultural and commercial centre. Thank you for your work!

I hope that in my lifetime, I see the Palestinian peoples returned their land and that their hearts rejoice in joy and peace. Seeing the beautiful world they had, I can only imagine that they once lived happily. We, the rest of the world, must stand and fight with them until their history is told more accurately and to end the apartheid and constant war waged against them.

I'm someone who was born and raised in the United Arab Emirates. In the 90s I was living in a neighborhood which had Palestinians who were teaching Mathematics, Science and Literature at UAE government schools. Now I'm connecting the dots as this documentary shows 50% of Palestinian youth were literate by 1948. This documentary makes sense
  • I can relate as a South African whose prople were displaced in their land of birth. Forced to luve in a 13% of the land and more than 80% of our rich land stolen by the colonizers . It for this reason that I support the Liberation of the Palestinian people. Thank you Aljazeera for sharing.
  • This was a great documentary, it showed how Palestinian was a hustling and bustling country full of life culture, and well educated people, A special thanks for AL JAZEERA DOCUMENTARY and all the journalists who prepare this memoriable for the history of PALESTINE.
  • Thank you Al Jazeera for this documentary. May the Palestinians be given the justice they deserve. May they find peace and forgiveness in their heart too.

"What happened in 1948 is too brutal to talk about. It's indescribable." My eyes were filled with tears as I looked at him. OMG, words are not enough to describe what they had to endure during those moments. Yeah, it's "indescribable." 😣
  • I’m so happy to see this. So many people think that Palestine was uninhabited before the Jews arrived. Not true. It’s was a beautiful country with beautiful people who had their land STOLEN ! Long live Palestine and Palestinians!
  • @dilfuzafayz
I have never been this much interested or educated about Palestine and its people. Reading more and more about it makes me really sad, I can't believe I've been unaware of the sufferings that Palestinians have been going through for years. Thank you for such an informative video! I pray and hope Palestine will be free from the occupation and its people will finally be fully happy in their own homeland. I also hope that the war in Gaza will stop very soon, insha'Allah 🤲

Most saddest and most informative documentary, the old man broke my heart telling his story😢😢😢
  • @queenlisa9224
One of the best documentaries I've ever watched. The story telling, history, footage and graphic are excellent. So many people have been misinformed for years, even decades! Now, time to open our eyes and see the TRUTH. Palestinians deserve their land and live in peace. All the best for Palestine.
  • @thevanamachaRIT
This was so greatly informative, and this is still so relevant to this day, of course. I'm a Haitian-American art student, and this isn't taught in our schools. Despite all the propaganda for Israel, there's so much Palestinian history that deserves to be searched and taught. I'm very grateful to have found this documentary, and will probably come back to reread and rewatch it.
  • My grandfather was a painter in Dier Debwan in the West Bank. It breaks my heart he lived though occupation and now he has passed. He left in the 70s and never got to see his homeland again. Allah Yerhamo Sido

Really great documentary. The whole world should see this! Thank you so much for helping us to realize the truths. I felt the truths in this. I cried in the end. That poor man whose Dad died when they cut down his trees. God help them.
  • Thank you, Al Jazeera!!! We really need a documentary like this! We always assume that the Palestinians are the ones who are causing trouble, when in reality the injustices they are suffering are beyond measure!!! I hope people would understand what they are FIGHTING for!!!
  • @GS-gq5is
I wish more people, especially Britons (and people in my own country, America) would take the time to see what Imperialism can do to a proud and prosperous people. It's a wonder Palestinians have been able to endure this terrible crime on humanity. Thank you for this informative documentary.
  • @thegentlemamak
Thank you for the eye opening documentaries. The world need to see this! it's hard not to side with the Palestinian people if you still have morals and have seen the truth
