im jealous of your military generator, that one is pretty damn clean!

I just picked up one of these for an unbelievable price. I'm glad I ran across your video. Was going to flip it but now, I think I'll keep it. 479 hours built in 81. In 91 had sound suppression kit installed. Have record of everywhere it's been. Good video

Got one of these.. MEP-802A awesome generator.. One thing that is stated on one of the tags is "EMP Proof"!! Not one piece of electronics on this puppy, no ignition, Relay logic!! Most all military is Diesel for common fuel, no ignition, EMP resistance. I tested mine at 7KW, not recommended, but took it without Any complaints. Surge capacity is greatly underrated. Military Grade! Found mine for $2K w/200 hours and fully serviced from a guy in Pennsylvania who was flipping surplus Military generators. There are commercial diesel generators, some run at 3600 RPM which IMO defeats the reason for going diesel where 1800 is much closer to diesel max torque/efficiency. Sound deadening in the rain proof enclosure is darned good. Standard Service items (filters mostly) are available commercially. My goal is to use this generator for intermittent battery charging in an inverter system. Solar power isn't that reliable here in Maryland with often overcast skies. Running a generator with a light load is where fuel efficiency is lost. My full use electrical requirement is about 1 MWH per month which equates to an average load of ~1.4KW. Running this generator at about 25% duty cycle w/a battery sourced split phase inverter system capable of ~12KW peak will reasonably run everything I have without any concern. The default power source should always be Grid power which is currently by far the cheapest power source.
  • I was buying them two at a time in hopes I could get at least one running. got both going put both up for sale first one to sell and I keep the other. buyers called for both. so I sold both. bought two more same concept got one lemon with a sized engine kept the one parted the other out.

I figure that tiny bump/ripple in sign wave on up and down would be it firing, being a 4 stroke 2 cylinder you should see 2 bumps like what was shown. Very neat to see that.

What makes these military diesels last longer than the cheaper one you showed is the fact that the engine it runs at 1800 RPM vs 3600 RPM of the smaller one. They make 3600 RPM diesels also and those will last a little longer than the gas versions but not alot more. The bearings and all moving parts of the higher speed engines wear out at a MUCH faster rate logarithmically.
  • wow i'm amazed of the amount of features of the military generators(and the cleanliness of the power through the oscilloscope) , i thought that they were designed just to power aircrafts(that uses 400hz) but from your video i have learned that, military genset is 1000 times superior than comercial, with that... i just have to congratulate you for your initiative to upload something like that, I´m strongly encouraging you in the name of the whole community to tell us more about them(servicing wiring diagrams, servicing components and other devices not seen on comercial gensets),i have to ask do they have synchronizer for automatic paralleling with other machines? we'll tracking you continuously..........great job!!!! .
  • @TYMWLTL
They are some beautiful machines !
  • On the cheap one the scope was connected between line and the chassis. On the good one it was connected between line and neutral. Depending on the internal wiring this might not matter.
  • @JoshKilen
very nice comparison between the two.

Know I guy who had a 15k military gen. Had power and was even heating his pool after a storm knocked out power for a week.
  • look up ch-1 generator interlock switch kit from national RAM electronic. it works off the same principal. keep the main breaker from being in the on position while the generator breaker is on and vice versa
  • @MrTk6969
    That's a 3 ton outdoor unit not 3.5t. Fyi
  • @nightvision327
YOUR A/C COMPRESSOR IS RUNNING BUT BY THE LOOKS OF THAT COIL NOT FOR LONG!!! YOU FITTIN TO BE HOT THIS SUMMER!!!
  • Hello I’m looking at one now 2009 Mep 802a with 125 hours no resets. It looks good on outside. I see some whitish staining on hoses like it was dripping on insides. He asking $3500.

How long will this generator run on a single tank of gas at full load or half load?
