  • A thing I would like to add is the author gave a tribute to the sculptor of thorfinn's statue by naming his best friend after him.
  • Fascinating that Askeladd could draw inspiration from a Norwegian myth about stoking the fire, when he spends his entire time in the story stoking the fires of war
  • Thorfinn will be known more than Lief Erickson overtime just because of the anime lol

If I remember from history class: Leif Erickson actually did land in the province Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. He made friends with the local first nation people there and probably smoked. There are still traces of viking settlements there. Also, I'm not sure but he probably killed a bunch of those guys with new diseases.

Vinland Saga takes a lot of historical liberties but then it makes sense for it to do so because the Saga of the Greenlanders and Erik The Red's Saga are both legendary accounts of real historical events. Vinland Saga is literally what it says on the tin.

I'm Really impressed by this video. It's really interesting and extremely well edited. I love Vinland Saga but I was never aware of how accurate it was to actual history.
  • @vijaz5559
Vinland Saga is infinitely better than any Live action Viking show ever

I must admit, I was a little surprised when I found out ''Askeladden'' was depicted as a villian in an anime, I grew up with stop motion films based around the original tales! The only evil thing I can remember that he ever did was when he tricked a troll to stab himself! x)

I’m starting to realize I’m just like my grandpa watching history channel 24/7… when I look at my favorite manga it’s all historical based Manga
  • I’m so impressed with the anime I actually had to look up some history to see how accurate the anime is
  • @askeladd6115
I wonder how the manga will end... I really don’t want it to end tragically for Thorfinn like in real life 😭
  • @miche9611
Yeah, this anime is amazingly historically accurate, but one point: the Wales. It is not credible that Welsh warriors of the eleventh century would have used Roman armors and ships. What was Roman Britannia did not survived the retirement of the Roman legions and the invasion of the Anglo-Saxons, more than 500 years before the story told in the Vinland saga. Therefore, that part is totally anachronistic.

Something they skipped in Vinland Saga was the role of poetery to the old Norse. Poetry was GIGANORMOUS in the viking world. It was an oral culture where the skald and poetry was tv, the movies, high culture and low culture, history department, legal department, everything. They could create poetry on the fly and they would memorize stories of enormous length and complexity. It might have been the right choice to skip poetry, from a story telling perspective. Just thought I should mention it.

Actually, Cnut's mother is known. She is Sigrid the Haughty, also known as Gunhild, who assasinated king Swayn.

Great video, Yuki did a lot of research visiting and touring places like Iceland before starting Vinland Saga to make his manga realistic and historically accurate in many ways.

When you learn Bluetooth is named after a king and realize the logo is obviously a rune
  • @ChanoTha1

  • Great video. The effort you put into research is phenomenal.
