Here is a video on how to introduce dogs and birds to each other! Introducing dogs and birds to each other will require training, supervision, and precautions. Before introducing your bird to your dog, it's important to have a firm understanding of both bird and dog body language and behavior as that will help guide you in the introduction process. If your dog has a strong prey drive, it's essential to redirect your dog's prey drive away from your birds and onto other activities to tame their prey drive. Have someone help you during the introduction process and even consider hiring a dog trainer if needed to tame your dog's prey drive. Dogs and birds can get along in the same household but that will take lots of patience, training, and supervision.

SAFETY IS THE NUMBER ONE PRIORITY. Please always ALWAYS supervise your pets and if you strongly feel that your dog cannot be around your bird, then it will be better to keep them separate.

I have 6 house dogs and I’m PRETTTTYYY sure a single bird would create chaos between my dogs:( I just admire how smart and beautiful birds are and I’ve watched a million videos about birds which I know is not an easy job especially because I would want to give it the freedom to fly around.. therefore I will will keep watching these videos and living the fantasy of owning a bird through YouTube 😆

I think breed matters a lot. We picked our Pyrenees because they are bred to watch over prey animals on farms, including chickens. She was super gentle and protective of my conure.

I was kind of scared when I got my cockatiel because my dog is a terrier and those breeds are known to hunt small animals. We actually got reAlly lucky because my bird is the one bullying my dog. We are always careful when they are around each other but this video will help sooooo many people and birbs. Ur videos are so helpful, Keep doing what you’re doing!
  • Thank you so much for the info. I have a baby cockatiel named Jack and a 5 year old golden retriever named Sally. She’s a sweet dog but I wouldn’t trust her alone with him. They’ve learned to coexist when I’m cuddling them both.

i'm noticing the birds eat everything except for the broccoli bits lol, really informational video
  • I just got a parrot, Paco, Maxximus. I brought him home and introduced him to my 2 year old Cane Corso that I have personally trained. So far there have been no incidents. Paco and Maxximus were both curious at first, and Maxx is super interested when Paco jumps down to the ground. I have leash control with commands whils Maxx is off leash, but I wouldn't recommend that trust to anyone else that hasn't trained their own dog as much as I have. We live in Esteli, Nicaragua and off leash walk all the time. He only ever chases cats.

Your advice came just in time! We've been talking about a dog, but we have two two-year-old cockatiels. I was worried we could never make it work, but your video is giving me the confidence to seriously consider it. We've been working on recall training, but one of my birds isn't very food motivated -- can you suggest an alternative?
  • I have a dog and am planning on getting a green cheek within the next year. My dog has experience with a ringneck. My dog is a hunter, not with birds as much, rabbits are preferred. My bird will stay fully flighted just in case. This video is great and I will definitely implement some of this when I am ready to get the bird.
  • We had a dog, Quinn, a lab\pit mix, before we got our pineapple conure, Amie. Amie was clipped when we got him so we were very careful about them being near each other. We have bonded with Amie and have taught him recall. We introduced the two animals slowly. We allow them to be in the same room together. Quinn is a very good boy. He keeps his distance. Amie ignores Quinn. So far it is working!

I had budgies for yrs.And some really tame free fly birds.Growing up though my mother had cats and budgies.Funny enough the cat would often climb behind the bird cage in the window and chatter away at the squirrels and birds outside.Never threatened the birds in the house or did the birds show any fear of them.☺

I have 3 shih tzus and I am adopting an umbrella cockatoo. This video was very helpful. Although containing 3 dogs on a leash is daunting. I’m only really concerned about one of them having predatory behavior.

I have a cat and plan to get a bird I know dogs and cats aren't similar, but this video just gave me more tips for how to make her not hurt the bird. I have been binging a lot of your videos thanks for the information :)

I have two dogs and two birds who I got at roughly the same time. Toby (schnauzer-yorkey mix) almost ate Peridot (parrotlet) today causing me to have a melt down and hyperventilate after I got Peri back in his cage. Went on YouTube to find what I can do to stop that from happening again, so thanks for having this video!
  • I needed to hear this because i have two parakeets and thinking of getting a puppy next week thank you so much for this video advice
  • Girl thanks for making this video. I was about to get a dog (Jack Russell Terrier) and I have 8 birds.👍 Thank You!!!!!!!!!

my dog is a bird dog, and will sorta hunt birds so i can’t let her in my room lol! my big dog loves all my birds, and will let them fly on his back and will cuddle them, it’s my small dog that hunts all birds 🤦‍♀️
