Hiking The Great Range Traverse in a Day | Adirondack Mountains

Published 2022-07-23
I went out with my friends Andrew, and Ben to complete a 1 day traverse of the Great Range in the Adirondack High Peaks, the trail is 20+ miles long, has over 8,000 feet of elevation gain and crosses 8 peaks over 4,000 ft tall. Backpacker Magazine rated this trail as the 3rd hardest day hike in America www.backpacker.com/trips/america-s-hardest-dayhike…
The terrain was steep, wet, and rocky, but the views were unbeatable. The hike started shortly after 1 AM so we could be on top of Mt. Marcy for sunrise. Unfortunately those plans were foiled by 100% cloud cover, 40+ MPH winds, and subfreezing temps. Luckily the weather improved shortly after leaving Marcy and there were blue skies for most of the day. The total hike took just under 17 hours and ended at the Roostercomb trailhead in Keene Valley.

The best part of the hike was ascending the Saddleback Cliffs with an honorable mention to the Gothics' Slabs. These exposed rock features required focus as falling would have serious consequences, but the exposure made us feel on top of the world.
