The bedroom is considered a 'loft'. Therefore the open hole. It's a multi use area. Could be a bedroom, an office. Whatever. Very common in the 80's and early 90's house designs. Supposed to make your space more open I guess.

The “whole in the wall” behind the bed isn’t designed to have a bed in front of it. It’s to have a balcony/mezzanine type thing so you can look downstairs. Maybe throw some cute fairy lights on there and move the bed.
