Subaru Engine Guide - Which Subaru Engine Do I Have?

Published 2020-07-30
SUBARU ENGINE GUIDE! In this video we go over the different types of Subaru engines as well as the characteristics to tell which one is which.

Which Subaru engine do I have? We know this seems like a silly question but a lot of engines are mislabeled and people sometimes purchase the incorrect engine for their project. We thought we would create a guide to distinguish which engines are which. Please note this is for EJ20 and EJ25 Turbo motors.

You either have the Subaru engine that either leaks oil, consumes oil, got starved for oil and/or blew the head gaskets .
  • Went through a engine builder frasier engines. Best buy ever. Engine runs great got 50k on it troublefree. No oil comsumption. MLS headgasket. They upgraded all the proned troubles.

Thank you Whitney, today for directing me to y'alls video. This really educated me about the EJ205 that I pulled from my 03 impreza WRX- and making sure that I had made the right purchase of another JDM EJ205 from JDM-CALIFORNIA. Definitely going to be buying the kit for the AVCS and ECU. And thanks to everybody from iWire. <3
  • Thank you for this video! I damn near bought most likely the wrong engine. You guys rock
  • Just got an 05 sti. Came from B7 S4 & the engine bay is way more busy. Want to learn how to work on it. Thanks for the info fellas

Good to know those information sir because I had a bad experience from eBay in short they send us a totally junk engine burned ignition coil pack, lose compression totally, like asphalt engine oil no catalic converter wrong side connector to computer I don’t know what I’m doing now maybe I put now on junkyard sir thank you very much

Thanks, Did still miss some engine configurations eg. the Non turbo EJ25 with single AVCS and coil pack on top (hard to find parts for as it only exists from japan what i get) so lots of replacement parts even though i had a spare engine still had to buy parts from subaru...if only i could of afforded to make it into a performance car but you buy a 2k engine figured last more than 5k kms before head gaskets went
  • Very good video my question is if i bring non turbo engine and use its head block to my turbo is there any problem? thanks.

Question I have a full 09 wrx hatch and a full 00 obs wagon had them both for a couple years and have been poking around at swapping the wrx engine into my Impreza but Im a lil puzzled lol. Will my body harness and ecu be a direct plug and play? I’ve been doing a bit of researching to see if anyone’s really done this swap and I found a couple forms but they all stop posting updates, I know that the ej255 is a CAN BUS and that my ej22 isn’t so it’ll be a “harder” swap than usual, I also read on your website that it would possibly need a stand alone ecu for the vehicle to properly run and have everything on my dash work accordingly but if I swap the entire car over will I be fine? I would love to hear that there is a way (hopefully an easy way) to get this swap done and if there is anything I should be looking into. Thank you

I must say, this is one damn good video. I'm glad I watched it. Do you know if the 1999 Subaru Impreza automatic engine would fit the 1997 Subaru Legacy Outback? I really would appreciate your info. and also your contact info. Thanks and Aloha!
  • How about pulling valve covers, torqueing the heads to minimum values prior to reassembly? I was maintaining these aluminum motors in the 70s. It was a 12k Mile requirement. Gaskets have improved, but far from perfect, and Ally has a greater thermal expansion ratio than the finest steels. That won't change.

Hi ,i put jdm type Ra 1998 280 hp engine on my Subaru impreza 211 hp, but the temperature sensor (iat ) on air box filter was not connected. can you tell me which PIN of the ecu should I connect it to?
  • Thanks for the awesome Video! I have a 2005 USDM WRX that was swapped to a JDM EJ05 AVCS. I ordered the iWire AVCS Wiring kit intake/ bulkhead and ECU. the car runs and drives great! I'm having a hard time finding a diagram of which Cam sensor is which. I have a Check engine light for Camshaft Positing sensor 'B' Circuit bank 2! any help would be much appreciated.

I have an 2002 Wrx Impreza and has sti badges and I’m in process of replacing or rebuilding the engine so I’m wondering if it’s a ej207 or ej205 because I can’t find a 2002 wrx sti

Great video! I hope that you can help answer our question. We just had the engine replaced on our 2003 Forester 2.5xs. after the previous one failed. The mechanic said he had a "donor engine" from a car that had rolled over. Since the swap was made, the motor seems to have less power and shifts more often when going uphill. We did some research and wanted to make sure that an engine with the same power was installed. The previous engine, from the VIN plate, was EJ25 IBXUAB, the swap has EJ25 on one side and C218957 on the other side. Could you share your opinion on the similarity of the swap or at least confirm that the donor engine wasn't an older or inferior swap, thanks!
