Oklahoma City Thunder were young, upstart team that took the NBA by storm in the early part of the decade. Along with Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook and James Harden, they looked like they were set to become the NBA’s next dynasty.

In a few years later, they have only one NBA Finals appearance to show for drafting three league MVPs. With unfortunate circumstances, they enter a rebuilding phase without achieving the league’s ring even once.

the fact that winning 50 games in 09-10 only got them the 8th seed in the west is insane
  • @lvr6114
Crazy how they drafted 3 mvps in a row

Looking back OKC drafted damn near perfectly ! Shame they never got a chip

One key event contributing to their downfall missing from the timeline: Shortly after trading for Perkins, OKC extended him for 4 years and $36 million. Then when it came time to negotiate Harden's extension, OKC chose to remain under the luxury tax and lowballed Harden. That Perkins extension limited their financial flexibility, and few people think Perkins came close to living up to that contract. Boston was only willing to go to 4 years and $22 million, and once that hit an impasse, they traded Perk. The Perkins contract isn't really among the worst contracts of all time, but the domino effect of that whiff is one of the most significant in recent NBA history. But overvaluing Perkins could've been overcome if the team didn't insist upon trying to win an NBA title with All-NBA superstars while managing a second-tier payroll. Winning doesn't come cheap.

If they didn’t send Harden away to Houston when he was just entering his prime…. They could’ve easily had another go at it in 2013…. I’m sorry for you OKC fans though. You all were so close and who knows if you’ll ever get another chance with the management that you have.

can we really blame them when during their time, the west was brutal and when they reached the finals what was waiting was Miami.

Oh man what a strong team OKC was back in the day. KD,Harden,Russ. They played so well and almost won a title. They managed to draft 3 MVPs but failed to win a title. For me OKC was a great team but didn't ein a title.

Real Thunder fans know the Kendrick Perkins trade hurt this franchise more than anything. He was such a liability, especially on a team that already had shooting problems. That's why a huge percentage falls on Scott Brooks, he was a terrible offensive coach.

Their downfall all started when they had the audacity to put a 3rd pick on the bench

I'm so surprised with these draft picks, it's amazing how they get 3 MVP caliber players in the draft 3 seasons in a row.

I still wished kd won a ring with the thunder so it would make his warriors move less weaker 🥲
  • @Killy1212
Damn I never realized how bad they're fg percentage was through the decade my goodness
  • @ControlYourKids
They could have formed a dynasty with harden, kd, russ, and ray allen. (They prob wouldn't have gotten harden though, but still would have had a big three)
