Sweet but toxic. Endearing but detrimental. Lovable but noxious. Just like strawberries and cigarettes.
  • What if Troy and Conan collabed...that would be everything...they need to get on that

am i the only one who sees this song as rlly sad? like, it's v cute and lovely, but there's just this melancholic undertone that strikes me as being a heartbreak song. the mixture of strawberries and cigarettes evokes an image of someone who seemed sickeningly sweet, delicious and addictive but with a toxic and harmful side. the nostalgic vibe of this song makes me feel like troye is reminiscing on being so irrevocably in love with this boy whom he just couldn't get enough of, but the boy wasn't good for him and maybe was kinda manipulative ("you always leave me wanting more" and "we went right back to your games"). he was so besotted that he couldn't see the dark side to his lover until his heart was broken, and he's struggling to reconcile the sweet, beautiful boy that he thought he knew to the dangerous heartbreaker that he turned out to be, sort of like the bitter taste of cigarettes that is left on your tongue once the initial sweetness of the strawberries melts away. it's almost like the strawberries were a disguise for the tar and nicotine left behind by the cigarettes, painting varnish over a damaged surface. the refrain of "i've been a fool" ties into the idea of troye becoming so embittered & angry at himself for allowing his lover to deceive him when the signs were all there. so the overall impression that i get of this song is very sad, nostalgic and achingly painful. maybe i'm reading into it too much, but this honestly makes a lot of sense to me. there is the argument to be made that this doesn't exactly fit the story of 'love, simon' but it doesn't entirely need to. it's a story about gay love, after all.

this makes me wanna really experience life, do things im afraid of, just spend nights going on long drives, seeing the city lights with the love of my life.
  • Everyone, including me, feels this terrible nostalgia and this unbearable memory of something that could have been. Like falling in love for the first time with someone so distant, traveling hundreds of miles to finally meet, then have sex and whispered conversations, only to say goodbye and leave in the morning... and all you have left 10 years later is the image of the sheets and how the sun looked that morning.

Most of us are listening to this song imagining scenarios that we know will never happen. And some of us are reminiscing the memories spent together nostalgically. Like, but we couldn't go very far..so you sat and stared at my lips and I could already feel your kiss..long nights, day dreams..sugar and smoke rings are all bittersweet. We wanna go back to those good, old days but we tend to forget we had bitter memories there too. If you are having a bad time, remember one day your gonna miss this day too.

Remember when we first met? You said "light my cigarette" So I lied to my mom and dad I jumped the fence and I ran But we couldn't go very far 'Cause you locked your keys in your car So you sat and stared at my lips And I could already feel your kiss Long nights, daydreams Sugar and smoke rings, I've been a fool But strawberries and cigarettes always taste like you Headlights, on me Racing to 60, I've been a fool But strawberries and cigarettes always taste like Blue eyes, black jeans Lighters and candy, I've been a fool But strawberries and cigarettes always taste like you Remember when you taught me fate Said it'd all be worth the wait Like that night in the back of the cab When your fingers walked in my hand Next day, nothin' on my phone But I can still smell you on my clothes Always hoping things would change But we went right back to your games Long nights, daydreams Sugar and smoke rings, I've been a fool But strawberries and cigarettes always taste like you Headlights, on me Racing to 60, I've been a fool But strawberries and cigarettes always taste like Blue eyes, black jeans Lighters and candy, I've been a fool But strawberries and cigarettes always taste like you And even if I run away Give my heart a holiday Still strawberries and cigarettes always taste like you You always leave me wanting more I can't shake my hunger for Strawberries and cigarettes always taste like you Yeah, they always taste like you You Long nights, daydreams With that sugar and smoke rings Always taste like you Headlights, on me (and even if I run away) Racing to 60, I've been a fool (and give my heart a holiday) Still, strawberries and cigarettes always taste like Blue eyes, black jeans (you always leave me wanting more) Lighters and candy, I've been a fool (I can't shake my hunger for) Strawberries and cigarettes always taste like you
  • All of Troyes songs sound like they belong in a coming of age romance film
