Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, Minister for External Affairs of the Republic of India, addresses the general debate of the 78th Session of the General Assembly of the United Nations (New York, 19 - 26 September 2023).

----------------------------------------

India’s Minister for External Affairs Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said that pursuing national interests is not “being in contradiction with global good,” adding that when India “aspires to be a leading power,” this means to “take on greater responsibility and make more contributions.”

The Minister for External Affairs today (26 Sep) spoke at the General Assembly’s annual general debate.

The Indian diplomat said, “As the United Nations itself symbolizes, finding common ground is an imperative, to listen to others and to respect their viewpoints.”

“This is not weakness. It is the basics of cooperation. Only then, can collective efforts on global issues be successful,” Jaishankar continued.

Speaking about the African Union becoming a permanent member of the G20, the Indian diplomat said, “This significant step in reform should inspire the United Nations - a much older organization - to also make the Security Council contemporary.”

He reiterated, “Broad representation is after all, a prerequisite for both effectiveness and credibility.”

----------------------------------------

The UN General Assembly (UNGA) is the main policy-making organ of the Organization. Comprising all Member States, it provides a unique forum for multilateral discussion of the full spectrum of international issues covered by the Charter of the United Nations. Each of the 193 Member States of the United Nations has an equal vote.

The United Nations is an international organization founded in 1945. Currently made up of 193 Member States, the UN and its work are guided by the purposes and principles contained in its founding Charter.

The UN has evolved over the years to keep pace with a rapidly changing world.

But one thing has stayed the same: it remains the one place on Earth where all the world’s nations can gather together, discuss common problems, and find shared solutions that benefit all of humanity.

  • Be the person who breaks the cycle. If you were judged, choose understanding. If you were rejected, choose acceptance. If you were shamed, choose compassion. Be the person you needed when you were hurting, not the person who hurt you. Vow to be better than what broke you—to heal instead of becoming bitter so you can act from your heart, not your pain.
