An AI colorized vintage 1960 educational film on how to apply makeup, aimed at high school girls.
I’m still on the hunt for a vintage makeup film which is more inclusive to women of color.
Some of the advice here is good. Some of it is hilariously out of date. “Your face is your fortune” being a typical example to cringe to.

The sequence of makeup application for high school girls is as follows:

00:01 Cleansing
00:28 Powder makeup
01:12 Concealing skin blemishes
01:58 Lip makeup
03:23 Eyebrow tweezing
03:42 Eyebrow pencil makeup
04:45 How to apply Mascara
05:07 How to curl eyelashes
05:43 Blotting Lipstick

Original Title: Makeup - Good Grooming for Girls
Made by International Film Bureau Inc
Source: Personal 16mm collection Glamourdaze.
AI restoration by Glamourdaze.

In the 1950s and 1960s the International Film Bureau made numerous classroom teaching films in different languages for schools across the USA. This short film on the mysteries of makeup was one of several personal care films.

  • I cannot imagine how frustrating it was for women back then that struggled with fungal acne, cystic acne, or genetic acne. Considering that washing up and fixing your diet doesn't necessarily fix any of those types.

“Your face is your fortune.” As a woman of the 60’s this sums up the options women had for their future.

Patti’s lips are too full for her face? Oh, how the times have changed. From under-lining lips to over-lining.
  • I love watching these makeup videos from the past. They are a reminder that we don’t have to wear a mask of makeup and change the personality of our face to look beautiful. But it’s also nice that we have the choice.
  • Just shared this with my 39 and 23 yr old daughters. Curious what their thoughts are about this. If the girls back then knew how popular “full” lips would be they’d be shocked.
  • They didn’t mention hormones that cause blemishes. I never knew anyone while I was growing up,(I was born in 1960)or my moms generation that used a lip brush. It seems like everyone wore red lipstick for ages. During WW2 they were told it was patriotic to wear red. My mom only ever wore lipstick and nail polish.
  • “Patty uses a darker lipstick than Marge.” Did anyone notice that Patty’s lipstick was actually lighter than Marge’s? Also, “Patty notices that her lips are too full for her face.” Dang, Patty! People pay good money and endure painful procedures to look like that now! Lastly, “you could use a lash curler either before or after mascara.” Uh, no. Maybe the mascara back then was made of powder. Nowadays, you never want to use a lash curler after applying mascara. I know of more than one person who has pulled out some of their lashes using a lash curler after applying mascara.

It's interesting seeing someone with acne back in those days. I thought everyone had great skin based off of photos I've seen from that Era. Clearly I was wrong.
  • how curious, the eyelash curler looks 99% exactly the same as most used today.

eyelash curlers are such a strange invention. and no mention of hormones affecting your skin. poor Marge!

Since I was a teenager in the 60's, I found this very interesting. I had full lips and hated them, so I put my lipstick inside my lip line.

"Your face is your fortune." Is the single most toxic sentence to women's self esteem in the 20th century. Lord.
  • Ridiculous how many commenters are praising this routine for somehow being more “natural” than today’s standards. They got these girls caked up in powder and thick red lipstick, eyebrows are literally drawn on in an opaque line. There’s nothing wrong with it per say but to assume the average person today is wearing any more makeup on the daily is not true at all. We have more social freedom today to go without the bright matte lipstick or powders that I’m willing to bet did not match their skin tone. Instagram is not real life literally go outside and look at a human being.

Of course, if a woman has acne then she must be lazy and isn't washing herself :P
  • I love these types of videos especially from the 1950’s to 1960’s. On another note, I honestly don’t find Patty’s lips to be full, but rather normal/petit.

My generation & oh how we loved to wear pretty dresses & skirts, with stockings too & makeup to school💄 Loved being girly; still do! Not sure how we managed stockings in Deep South Louisiana with no A/C in school. The pic is me in High School, circa 1968.

I was a teenager/young adult in the 1960s and we didn’t look like that. This looks more like the 1940s or 1950s (and these “teenagers” look like they are 40 years old!).
  • @selene214
I always found eyelash curlers ancient looking compared to other makeup tools. Now i understand why :)
