I love castle defenses, but I also have a lot to learn. Let me know you have and critiques or suggestions!
  • @DarkDepth2000
Don’t worry, once the fort is completely destroyed they’ll use link as the last line of defense.
  • @Aurea_Astrae
The only reason a Lynel hasn't leveled the place to the ground is because link leveled the lynels before they could do that
  • @MapleRose9
I like the fact that other people besides Link are at least /trying/ to fight the monsters now. I'd like to see an analysis of the Monster Fortresses.

I can actually explain the plank thing: Lookout Landing is built right on the remains of Castle Town. In BotW, the area around Hyrule Castle is littered with the remains of buildings, but in TotK most of them are gone. It's highly likely all the good wood left in the area was scrapped to build Lookout Landing in a hurry, rather than spending time hauling in and sinking 200 logs. Which of course is not a good excuse, but it is an explanation.

The mental image of Link screaming at Purah and everyone else in Lookout Landing like Gordon Ramsey about how awful every aspect of the fort is is amazing
  • @xoboombow
The yiga has even better defences in any of their bases than the castle
  • @pokkiheart
this actually got me thinking about how long it took to build and how much time went into it. Because the game almost implies that nearly every change you see happened after "the upheaval" but we don't know if that was weeks, days, or hours before Link wakes up.
  • I like how after praising the underground area for being hidden he climbs the ladder, and shows how the entrance is in plain sight of Hyrule Castle.
  • @FIamestalker
To be fair to Lookout Landing, I got the impression at the start of the game that it basically didn't exist when Link and Zelda went to the Castle. I thought it was just the staging ground for Zelda, Purah and the researchers, and was turned into a fort and central command post after the Upheaval to "Look Out" for the missing Link and Zelda. It must have been constructed in a hurry with whatever materials they had on hand, which was likely mostly stuff from the Hudson Reconstruction caches, which would explain the heavy use of planks and wooden beams.
  • @eriatarka_
This video makes me imagine Link running around, yelling at random civilians, yelling at Purah, explaining all of this just hand gesturing to the areas he's complaining about

Cut em a little slack. This place wasn't originally intended to be a fort or a castle- it became one out of necessity. They had to construct this while already surrounded by enemies, and the bulk of the outer walls was probably made over only a week or two. I think it's implied that Hyrule Castle was cleared of monsters between BotW and the Upheaval, so they may have thought they didn't need to defend as much from that angle.

I feel like although the lookout landing was supposed to give link a sort of starting base to stay in, it could’ve had more special moments that made it more than just an outpost. Some ideas would be like a horde of monsters start invading the lookout landing and you have to help the soldiers fend off the monsters. Things like that would make the lookout landing feel a bit more special or atleast feel more like an important part to your adventure than just a house of men and beginnings of fan art.
  • @eldibs
I just figured Lookout Landing wasn't originally designed as a fort but as a research station, and they hastily had to throw together fortifications from what they had available when monster started cropping up again. Also, they probably don't expect the monsters to lay proper siege, they probably just expect small-to-medium groups of monsters in waves, not an army of 2,000 using actual tactics and strategy.
  • @joshmccormack9375
Don’t forget that the Escape Tunnel is to escape Hyrule Castle itself, not Lookout
  • @Sheylenna
I think one of the reasons Lookout Landing is built so strangely is because it was built as a residence first... then they added the tower. When the miasma started, they probably started fortifying it and used the planks they were using to build more buildings to build the wall. Also, the area they built in was already a lake with 4 entrances they had to bring in soil to make the landing as it is in TotK since it's the sacred ground ruins the lake was much larger in BotW.
  • funnily enough, when attacking Fort Hateno early on in my playthrough, i was unironically killed by the wooden stakes at least a small handful of times, especially from an enemy knocking me back into them
  • @shiners3328
Did you know the castle sucks at being easily defensible? Thing got taken over TWICE
  • @AdrianHereToHelp
I think one thing in favor of the moat is the fact that monsters in BotW/TotK can't swim, and will just die when submerged in water, save lizalfos. I don't know how many lizalfos are in the surrounding area, but that would cut into the monster forces significantly once all the drawbridges are raised and such (obviously the moat can still be bridged and got around other ways, but that fact does help)
  • @TheQuilavaQueen
I like that you did all of this without acknowledging that they used wooden defences against enemies that we know can and will imbue their weapons and arrows WITH THE POWER OF FIRE. And have flying creatures that could just supply drop monsters into the inside of the castle. But in all seriousness fantastic video, and I'd love to see something like this for Fort Hateno, Gerudo City or Hyrule Castle itself.
