The progressive rock group Rush, formed decades ago in the Toronto suburbs by guitarist Alex Lifeson, bass player Geddy Lee and drummer Neil Peart, became Canada's most legendary rock band ever, with more than 40 million albums sold. Lifeson and Lee (author of a new memoir, "My Effin' Life") talk with correspondent Jim Axelrod about their particular blend of musicianship, stagecraft and goofiness; how tragedy upended the band with the death of Peart; and what might constitute Rush's next chapter.

The gold standard of rock and roll. Three wonderful guys. RIP Neil.

Everybody on Earth deserves a friendship as long and healthy as Geddy and Alex.

A very touching interview. RUSH never went through the calamity of doing hardcore drugs and band members going off to rehab or commit suicide. The best, they never split up or sued each other. They were a family that played together and stayed together. The road they have traveled on to superstardom had to be difficult in the beginning. Their music was certainly different and fresh. They stayed true to themselves and their art. RIP Neil Peart

Rush's been my absolute passion and inspiration for decades. Neil was the reason I started learning the drums. My dad went to Rush in RIo in 2002 and grabbed the DVD a couple of months later. Six-year-old me would watch it over and over again, sitted on the floor, pillows in front of me and wooden spoons in my hands, banging to Earthshine and memorizing every detail of Neil's solo. Twenty years later, still rocking to it, appreaciating Neil's fantastic lyrics, Geddy's resounding bass and Alex's distinct tunes. I'm a drummer to this day and will be a fan until the day I die.

Rush, one of the greatest bands ever. No band like them will exist again. True musicians. No auto tune here.

I love Rush. This made me tear up multiple times. The guys seem so genuine and down to earth. RIP, Professor.

For a wealthy rock star, Geddy is such a down to earth guy.

I honestly cannot think of any other musicians that have a true and honest love for. Not only giants of music, but incredibly decent human beings. Rest in peace, Neil. ♥♥💔

If Rush doesn't reunite it's not the end of the world. They have a cemented legacy and a catalog of music that will stand the test of time. It's worked out for Led Zeppelin when they lost John Bonham. They never reunited to make new music ever again and 43 years later, they're still celebrated.
  • Never a big fan of the music, but they have more integrity than any band out there. Always stayed true to their vision and never wavered. They did it on their terms.

Great way to wake up on a Sunday morning ☆ I was high school teen girl so infatuated with this band and everyone knew it even the boys. In fact I got every friend their concert tickets. I went two nights one night girl crew and the other with my guy crew and it was normal. Lol 😂. I stopped going to shows when my father had gliomastoma in 2013 before Neil became ill. But I understood this gut wrenching diagnosis. My grandpa, a watchmaker, extraordinaire, fled from Nicaragua with my grandmother in the 40s from massive corrupt government to S.F. Strangely my events did match rush evolution. That said I cannot be more proud of my favorite band that I love so much. Ged and AL are the best. Love you guys for everything. Keep rocking Rush rules ☆
  • Alex: We'd seen a lot more girls at our shows. Geddy: Like five or six. lol

If you watch the doc Beyond the Lighted Stage, one guy says "Ive been a fan for 30 years and they never let me down." Such a terrific band.

As far as I am concerned, there is no more RUSH without 🥁Neil Peart!!!!!

Rush is the soundtrack to most every part of my life
