Honda Masanobu is presented to us in the Shogun TV show as Kashigi Yabushige. Masanobu existed in the tumultuous era of the Sengoku period, marked by fierce Samurai Lords competing for supremacy, each aspiring to claim the coveted title of Shogun amidst a backdrop of extreme violence and upheaval.

In the midst of the chaos and devastation, Honda Masanobu, a relatively insignificant daimyo, forged an alliance with Tokugawa Ieyasu and would become one of his closest friends and retainers with the two communicating in code in many meetings to secretly communicate without others knowing. Yet, their relationship wasn't always amicable with the two even going to war against one another at one point. The Sengoku period was a time of warlords engaging in intricate mental warfare, involving schemes, betrayals, alliances, and enemy eliminations. It was a brutal contest of psychological manipulation and conflict. Amidst this turmoil, Masanobu emerged as a prominent figure, ascending to one of the highest echelons of power in Japan. This is story.

The actor in this version is excellent. Against my will he is making me like this character. He just exudes charisma.

Yabushige is probably the character that Clavell had the most creative freedom writing about, considering how much he’s so different from the real Honda Masanobu.

Just got back from Japan and Osaka Castle is amazing. My interest in the feudal lords of Japan and the battles are so interesting. My interest in the Edo period and prior has grown significantly.
  • In the book, this character is even more untrustworthy. However, I like the character as portrayed by the actor. I don't know why. There's nothing especially redeemable but for some reason the character appeals to me. I have to give my congrats to a very good actor.

The actor Tadanobu Asano also played Chinggis Khan in "Mongol" from 2007, one of the greatest movies ever made. I haven't seen him in alot, but just from his stellar performance in "Mongol", he's one of my favorite actors.

Shogun brought me here. Thanks for the well-narrated history of the man. He was obviously a lot more honourable in life.
