The 27-year-old is the first person to wear a hijab in the Australian parliament. She spoke about her family's journey from Afghanistan to Australia after the Taliban came to power and her experience of being ridiculed for wearing a hijab while she was at university.

Payman said she 'gave herself the audacity' to 'challenge the system and to see how far I would go'.
