Hi Friends, Happy Thursday!

Welcome to the Dark History podcast. Remember that movie, The Purge? The one where for one day only you could commit whatever crime you wanted. Yeah, back when it came out in 2013, everyone was losing their minds. They were so worried that people would just randomly start murdering each other. Well, what if I told you there was already a real-life Purge that had happened in America over a hundred years ago? Well, Buckle Up Baby. In today’s episode, we’re talking about the Red Summer of 1919. A time in history when riots broke out in 26 different cities across the country and the cops were just letting people murder.

  • So important that history never stops being talked about even when it’s horrific.
  • We weren't taught anything but slavery and the civil rights movement in school. I always heard people say ," if black people want this or that they should build it themselves " . I always wondered why we didn't.. UNTIL I FOUND OUT WE DID. We built towns, cities, lucrative businesses but everytime They destroyed them. Over and Over again! 😢
  • I had my almost-13-year-old daughter watch this episode with me. I’ve been doing my best to have open, raw, honest conversations with her about racism and the wrongdoings and injustices of likely many of our own ancestors for a few years now… VERY important in my eyes as her mother to make sure she grows up to be a knowledgeable, kind, respectful, honest adult who treats absolutely everyone equally.

The problem I see is we keep hiding this history from children. And if you don't learn from history you're doomed to repeat it. This was an excellent episode.

Bailey you saved me from doing the dishes in silence 😩 I’m so grateful! We love you.
  • @AaliyahShenel
I’m sad to say I’ve never heard of this before. As a black woman, I want to say thank you for covering stories like this on your channel with an open mind & actually caring about the things you cover ❤
  • Honestly I had the most amazing neighbor growing up, her name was Chandra, she was like a grandma to the neighborhood kids (I grew up in a tiny town in way down southwest Florida) She was a proud African American Women and honestly as a young kid, I was never raised with any hate towards anyone, our neighborhood was super diverse. She taught some of us about her family and their history and I learned some much about this from her and honestly her only. School never mentioned it, not even a sentence. It truly is disgusting what so many innocent people went through to simply have basic civil rights. I miss her dearly, this was like 25-30 years ago, she has passed on later in my life, after living a long and beautiful life, proud of her heritage and proud to speak of it. Thank you for covering this, more people should know what happened.
  • The Red Summer of 1919 is one of the devastating periods of American History. Especially when Black vets coming back from WWI had to defend themselves against their own countrymen.
  • As a native Tulsan, we also were not taught about this in school. It’s wild how we can be a block from OSU Tulsa and still see blocks of empty lots where the houses burned because legislation passed years before that disallowed the survivors to rebuild their homes on the land they owned. It’s just in the last few years they’ve allowed a school to be built on part of that area. It’s decimated with poverty but there are still homes standing that show the affluence that neighborhood had 102 years ago. It’s despicable.

Thank you for saying " Black Americans" we're not African.... We are Americans. I can't wait for the day when we can all just be Americans, and not separated by our tones or shades. But thank you.
  • I appreciate you doing your research on topics like this. There’s a lot of black people even myself a black women who have never heard half of these stories to none. I cried a little bit from hearing how horrendous we’ve been treated. It’s even more terrifying that we don’t even easily get this information at all and still have to live through the repercussions of our history. Thank you for shedding a light on it.
  • @TheMychaaaa
I moved to US from Poland almost 2 years ago, and I'm learning so much from Dark History, now I understand better some things about racism, about black people history. Thank you Bailey! ❤
  • @LanaCherise
The fact I’m born and raised in Chicago and didn’t know (knew of but didn’t know of) the Black Devils and seeing these statues so often 🥲 smh I’m appreciative of this episode
  • Bailey I am such a big fan!! I also teach Ethnic Studies and we just went over the Red Summer, it’s so refreshing to see this information being given to the public because so many people aren’t aware of REAL American history! Appreciate you and LOVE the way you deliver history. 🥰
  • @maryeckel9682
Thank you for uncovering another dark chapter in our history. I learned about the "Black Devils" as soldiers, but never specifically about what happened to them afterwards. It was just "Sadly, many Black serviceman came home to racial violence and lynchings." You and your team bring the details.
  • @luv2behot2003
So while I was pregnant this last time, I went through a phase of rewatching some of your older videos but also keeping up with your new stuff and it relaxed me so much since I was so uncomfortable. Now, when I watch your uploads and try to rock my baby to sleep I swear she crashes out so much easier! So thanks Bailey for helping a tired mama out. You're gonna have yourself another fan when she's a young lady 😊
  • @chantel2594
Wow-insane! This information has to be passed on, we can't allow these horrific acts to ever be repeated!
  • Last year, I wrote a 20 page paper about the red summer, emphasized on the Chicago riots. The things I learned during my research were so crazy. I found it interesting how I was learning these things about our history in my 20’s, things that I would have never known if I hadn’t cared to look.
